Understanding Yale University's Tuition and Financial Policies

Yale University, like many other prestigious institutions, offers a range of tuition and financial policies designed to support students in managing the costs associated with their education. These policies encompass tuition payment options, refund plans, financial aid eligibility requirements, and satisfactory academic progress standards. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of these aspects, drawing from Yale's official guidelines and related information.

Tuition Refund Plan (TRP)

The Tuition Refund Plan (TRP) serves as a financial safeguard for students and their families. It is designed to alleviate the financial burden of lost tuition, housing, and food expenses if a student needs to completely withdraw from their studies due to medical reasons during a term.

  • Eligibility: The TRP applies when a student provides written notification that they are unable to complete the term due to injury or sickness, and will not receive academic credit for that term. Complete withdrawal means that the student has given written notice that due to his/her injury or sickness completion of the term is not possible, and that no academic credit will be received for the term.
  • Cost: The cost of the TRP is determined by the total amount of tuition and other insured expenses. For specific cost information, it is recommended to contact A.W.G. Dewar Insurance Agency.
  • Underwriter: The Tuition Refund Plan TM is underwritten by Atlantic Specialty Insurance Company, New York, NY, a member company of OneBeacon Insurance Group, for A.W.G. Dewar Insurance Agency, Four Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02169.
  • Contact: For more detailed information about the Tuition Refund Plan, contact A.W.G. Dewar Insurance Agency directly. The Tuition Refund Plan TM is the Service Mark of A.W.G.

Student Accounts and Billing

The Office of Student Accounts, located at 246 Church Street, manages student accounts, billing, and related services. The Student Account is a record of all the direct charges for a student’s Yale education such as tuition, room, board, fees, and other academically related items assessed by offices throughout the University.

  • Account Statements: Students and their authorized proxies can generate their own account statements in YalePay in pdf form to print or save. Students can grant others proxy access to YalePay to view student account activity, set up payment plans, and make online payments.
  • Late Fees: The Office of Student Accounts will impose late fees of $125 per month (up to a total of $375 per term) if any part of the term bill, less Yale-administered loans and scholarships that have been applied for on a timely basis, is not paid when due. Students who have not paid their student account term charges by the due date will also be placed on Financial Hold. The hold will remain until the term charges have been paid in full.
  • Payment Options: There are a variety of options offered for making payments toward a student’s Student Account. Payments made to a Student Account in excess of the balance due (net of pending financial aid credits) are not allowed on the Student Account.

Payment Methods

Yale University provides several convenient methods for students and their families to pay tuition and other expenses:

  • Electronic Check (ACH): Payments can be made directly from a checking or savings account. There is no charge to use this service. Bank information is password-protected and secure, and there is a printable confirmation receipt.
  • International Payments via Flywire: Yale University partners with Flywire, a leading provider of international payment solutions, to provide a fast and secure way to make international payments to a Student Account within YalePay. Students and authorized proxies can initiate international payments from the Make Payment tab in YalePay by selecting “International Payment via Flywire” as the payment method, and then selecting the country from which payment will be made to see available payment methods. International payment via Flywire allows students and authorized proxies to save on bank fees and exchange rates, track the payment online from start to finish, and have access to 24/7 multilingual customer support.
  • Rejected Payments: A processing charge of $25 will be assessed for payments rejected for any reason by the bank on which they were drawn.

Yale Payment Plan

The Yale Payment Plan provides parents and students with the option to pay education expenses monthly. It is designed to relieve the pressure of lump-sum payments by allowing families to spread payments over a period of months without incurring any interest charges.

  • Enrollment: Participation is optional and elected on a term basis. Depending on the date of enrollment, students may be eligible for up to five installments for the fall and spring terms.
  • Installments: Payment Plan installments will be automatically deducted on the 5th of each month from the bank account specified when enrolling in the plan.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Yale is committed to making education accessible.

  • Merit-Based Scholarships: Scholarship recipients are automatically considered for all merit-based named scholarships. M. Albin ’66 and Nancy T. Joan B. Henry R. Robert “Biff” McKellip Jr. Peter T. Daniel P. and Ruth S.
  • Yale joins several other prestigious academic institutions, including Harvard, MIT and the University of Pennsylvania, that have recently expanded financial assistance in a bid to attract more middle- and lower-income Americans. Emory University, a private research school in Atlanta, will start this fall also offer free tuition for families with incomes below $200,000.The affordability push from some of the nation's most prominent schools comes as some younger people question the value of a college degree, given the often sizable out-of-pocket costs.

Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

To maintain eligibility for Federal financial aid, students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. This policy applies only to students enrolled in Yale College degree programs. For Yale College students who are simultaneously pursuing an undergraduate certificate, SAP for certificate coursework is evaluated independently by the school or academic unit offering the certificate. Yale is required to establish Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies and standards that govern students’ eligibility for Federal financial aid. SAP is the measure of each student’s progress toward completion of a Bachelor’s degree, as well as a measure of their ability to meet the minimum academic standards set by their institution. It is important to note that Yale College also maintains a separate and distinct Promotion and Good Standing policy that sets the school’s expectations for Yale College student’s academic advancement.

  • GPA Requirement: Students enrolled at Yale College must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better at each evaluation point. At the end of each student’s second academic year (i.e., fourth semester), students must have a GPA consistent with Yale College’s graduation requirements.
  • Course Completion Rate: Students enrolled in a Yale College program of study must maintain a cumulative course completion rate of 67%. Pace is calculated by dividing the total number of credits successfully completed by the total number of credits attempted across all terms of enrollment in the program (e.g. INC, TI, ABX, and other temporary grades neither count as attempted nor passed and must be converted to a letter grade 45 days after the end of the term or within 48 hours of the start of a new academic year. Unconverted temporary grades that extend beyond 45 days at the end of the term or into a new academic year will be counted as unsuccessful attempts at the next SAP evaluation point. Audited classes do not count toward Satisfactory Academic Progress. Course repetitions count toward a student’s cumulative GPA and are counted in the qualitative measurement of SAP. Transfer Credits accepted by Yale College that count toward a student’s program will count in quantitative evaluation of SAP. A standard bachelor’s degree program consists of 36 credits. The Maximum Timeframe (MTF) within which all students must complete their given program of study is 54 credits which represents 150% of the published length of the program as expressed in credits.
  • Evaluations: Satisfactory Academic Progress evaluations will be performed by the Financial Aid Office with support from the Registrar’s Office. Evaluations occur annually at the end of the spring term, which coincides with the end of the school’s standard payment period for programs longer than one academic year. A mid-degree SAP evaluation will also be conducted after the fourth term of full-time enrollment.
  • SAP Probation: Students who successfully appeal a SAP determination that resulted in a loss of federal financial aid eligibility will be reinstated for at least one semester on SAP probation. While on SAP probation a student regains their eligibility for federal student aid funds and is expected to make SAP by the end of the semester in which their aid eligibility is reinstated or by a period prescribed in an approved academic plan. Students who fail to meet the requirements to remain in good standing for Satisfactory Academic Progress at any evaluation point will lose federal aid eligibility for all subsequent semesters.
  • Appeals: To submit an appeal, students must contact the Financial Aid Office within fifteen (15) days following any SAP evaluation resulting in their loss of federal aid. The appeal should include a plan for meeting SAP that extends no further than the end of the following academic year. Plans will be reviewed and approved by the Financial Aid Office, the Registrar’s Office, and a representative from the Yale College Dean’s Office. Appeals will be granted within forty-five (45) days and the results of any appeal whether successful or unsuccessful will be communicated to students no more than fifteen (15) days before the start of a term. Students who successfully appeal a loss of federal financial aid eligibility related to SAP purposes, will have their federal financial aid reinstated on a probationary period of at least one semester.

Title IV Funds and Withdrawal

Federal regulations govern the refund of Title IV funds for students who withdraw from Yale University. For purposes of determining the refund of Title IV funds, any student who withdraws from the Jackson School of Global Affairs for any reason during the first 60 percent of the term will be subject to a pro rata schedule that will be used to determine the amount of Title IV funds a student has earned at the time of withdrawal. A student who withdraws after the 60 percent point has earned 100 percent of the Title IV funds. Recipients of federal and/or institutional loans who withdraw are required to have an exit interview before leaving Yale.

  • Withdrawal from YSPH: For purposes of determining the refund of Title IV funds, any student who withdraws from YSPH for any reason during the first 60 percent of the term will be subject to a pro rata schedule that will be used to determine the amount of Title IV funds a student has earned at the time of withdrawal. A student who withdraws after the 60 percent point has earned 100 percent of the Title IV funds. In 2025-2026, the last days for refunding Title IV funds will be October 30, 2025, for M.P.H. A rebate of one-quarter (25 percent) of tuition will be granted for withdrawals that occur after the first quarter of a term but on or before the day of midterm: in the fall term, October 15, 2025, for Executive M.P.H. Recipients of federal and/or institutional loans who withdraw are required to have an exit interview before leaving Yale.
