Understanding the Youth of the Year Program

Unlike many programs with a fixed duration, Youth of the Month is commonly run on an ongoing basis over the course of a year. While primarily a recognition program, it also incorporates various leadership experiences.

Junior Youth of the Year

Distinct from the National Youth of the Year program, Junior Youth of the Year seeks to develop junior leaders ages 10-13 within the Club environment. The program fosters Club members’ emerging leadership abilities while preparing them for later participation in the Youth of the Year program. In addition to recognizing the leadership achievements of Club youth, Junior Youth of the Year also cultivates their leadership potential, providing the foundation they need for advanced leadership development, academic excellence and postsecondary success.

National Youth of the Year

Each year, one exceptional Club member is selected to be the National Youth of the Year, serving as an ambassador for Boys & Girls Club youth as well as a voice for all of our nation’s young people. Over the decades, these individuals have exemplified the Boys & Girls Club mission and are proof to the impact Clubs make in transforming and saving kids’ lives.

Becoming National Youth of the Year is an exciting and inspiring journey. Each year, thousands of Club teens participate in local, state and regional Youth of the Year events. Six teens, including five regional winners and a national military youth winner, advance to the National Youth of the Year Celebration, where one outstanding young person is named Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s national teen spokesperson.

The Youth of the Year program at Boys & Girls Club of Garfield is more than a competition; it’s a journey aligning with our mission to inspire and enable young people. This ongoing program offers both current members and former Club alumni, particularly those pursuing higher education, an extraordinary opportunity to develop and showcase their leadership qualities.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Please note: Due to COVID-19, we will make an exception on continuous and consecutive membership. We recommend submitting your application by February 6th, 2025 for one final review and to received feedback prior to the final deadlines. The completed Youth of the Year application will be accepted until February 14th, 2025 at 11:59 pm. The Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fund

The Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fund is made possible by the generosity of past Club kids and supporters. “Because of this scholarship, I not only attended Vanderbilt University. I also graduated debt free. The entire trajectory of my education and career would have been altered without it. I am extremely thankful for the scholarship and the doors it opened for me.

“The scholarship provided me with incredible financial freedom I wouldn’t have had without it. It covered all secondary and hidden costs such as a laptop, textbooks and summer opportunities that really allowed me to thrive and stand apart from my peers. I was able to focus on academics and take up extracurricular activities I wouldn’t have been able to participate in otherwise. From my start as a youth center member, to being a leader and staff member, I’ve seen it from every angle and my opinion remains the same.

Support for Military Families

The War Department is committed to supporting the overall well-being of military families and offers a variety of programs and services to help military-connected youth and teens navigate the challenges of military life and thrive. For more than 30 years, the DOW has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to offer additional support programs at youth centers in military installations across the world.

Military-connected teens who demonstrate exceptional character and accomplishments and show they’re ready to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood can compete in installation, state and regional competitions.

New Jersey Youth of the Year Program

Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey announces the 2022 New Jersey Youth of the Year winners.The 14 outstanding youth honored received 47,000 in scholarships. The Youth of the Year title is a prestigious honor bestowed upon an exemplary young person in recognition of leadership, service, academic excellence and dedication to live a healthy lifestyle.

Now in its 75th year, the Youth of the Year program honors our nation’s most awe-inspiring young people on their path to great futures. This program is the culmination of many months of training and preparation, as well as a day of rigorous interviews for these 14 outstanding honorees.

The NJ Youth of the Year program would not be possible without support from our New Jersey sponsors. Scholarship Awards

Each Youth of the Year honoree will receive a $2,000 scholarship, the Top 3 Runners-Up and the NJ Military Youth of the Year, will receive $3,500 each, and the State Youth of the Year receives a $10,000 scholarship from the Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey.

Susan Haspel, State Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs in New Jersey, discusses the Youth of the Year program and how teens focused on leadership and community service can earn scholarships. The New Jersey State Youth of the Year is the premier youth leadership program recognizing the extraordinary achievements of Boys & Girls Club teens. Youth of the Year candidates embody excellence in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s four priority outcome areas of Health and Well-Being, Character and Leadership, Academic Success, and Life and Workforce Readiness.

Each year, local New Jersey Boy & Girls Clubs select an outstanding teen (ages 14-18) to represent them in an inspiring journey toward becoming the New Jersey State Youth of the Year or Military Youth of the Year. Finalists participate in a formal interview before a distinguished panel of judges, where they are evaluated on public speaking, essays, interviews, and overall application quality.

The judges then select the New Jersey State and Military Youth of the Year, who will be announced at the New Jersey Youth of the Year Reception and Award Ceremony on May 13, 2025, at Montclair State University. With additional support from National Signature Sponsor, Kohl’s, the Youth of the Year program empowers young leaders on their journey from local recognition to state, regional, and national competitions.

The New Jersey State Youth of the Year will compete for the Northeast Regional Youth of the Year title in June, with a chance to earn a $20,000 renewable scholarship. The Youth of the Year program inspires and equips young people to lead, succeed, and serve as voices for their generation.
