YSC Academy: Shaping Soccer's Future Through Education
The YSC Academy, affiliated with the Philadelphia Union, represents a significant development in American soccer. This private high school for soccer players aims to cultivate talent and provide a unique educational environment. For those unfamiliar with this project, here's a breakdown of its key aspects.
A Novel Approach to Youth Development
YSC Academy stands out as a unique institution in the United States. While the IMG Academy in Florida shares some similarities, YSC Academy distinguishes itself through its direct affiliation with a Major League Soccer (MLS) team. While a couple of other MLS squads have partnered with local high schools, the Union are believed to be the first professional sports team in North America to essentially create their own school from the ground up. This model reflects the team-sponsored youth academies prevalent in Europe, which are renowned for producing top-tier soccer talent. Some people believe schools like these can help the United States close the soccer gap with Europe.
The Union's Vision: Nurturing Local Talent
From the start, Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz has valued youth development. The Union's commitment to youth development is a driving force behind YSC Academy. The long-term vision is to cultivate a roster of players primarily from the Philadelphia region. This strategy aligns with Major League Soccer's (MLS) encouragement of homegrown talent, as these signings don't impact the team's salary cap. The academy is seen as a crucial component in achieving this goal.
An Integrated Environment for Student-Athletes
The academy's location, a mere 100 yards from the Union's training ground at YSC Sports, provides a seamless integration of academics and athletics. The daily schedule includes morning training, followed by classes next door, and further training in the afternoon. Students also receive four nutritional meals per day. This integrated environment and collaboration between Union and YSC Academy shapes the student-athlete experience- redefining education and elevating American soccer. For the Union, they will now be able to mold the best soccer players in the Philly area, while driving through the cultural identity of their franchise.
Student Body and Admissions
YSC Academy serves 87 students in grades 7-12. The school is grades 8 through 12 but in an attempt to grow it from the ground up, there will be no 12th-graders in the inaugural year. The initial cohort consisted of 32 boys, all participants in the Union's youth development programs. Specifically, 21 were part of the full-time Union academy (U-14, U-16, U-18) squads, and 11 were in the Union Juniors program. Admission is based not only on soccer prowess but also on character and academic standing. According to Richie Graham, the owner of YSC Sports, a partial owner of the Union and the brainchild for the school, “It’s not a school for every kid". The student:teacher of Ysc Academy is 10:1.

Geographic Focus and Future Expansion
The Union primarily focuses on recruiting talent from the Philadelphia area. While the primary focus is on local talent, the academy also considers student-athletes from outside the region, providing them with host families.
Prioritizing Home Life
Instead of a residency program, YSC Academy emphasizes the importance of home life for its students. Graham and Sakiewicz said they looked into a dorm structure and studied some European models, before concluding that high school-aged kids are at their best when they have a home life.
Inclusivity and Future Plans for Girls
While initially exclusive to boys, plans are in motion to eventually include girls in the YSC Academy. Sakiewicz indicated that admitting girls is a matter of time. “For girls aspiring to go to college, play in a professional league or play for the US national team, it would be a great opportunity and it’s absolutely in our plans,” Sakiewicz said. “But it’s too early.”
Tuition and Financial Aid
Yes, the tuition for the school is $15,000, but 20 of the 32 kids will get financial aid, as provided on an in-need basis. Tuition for YSC Academy includes the use of a computer, textbooks, select school supplies, substantial snacks, college entrance exams (PSAT, SAT), and graduation costs. Please note YSC Academy tuition does not include residency or transportation costs. “It’s pretty inexpensive for a high-level education like this,” Sakiewicz said. “For those students that don’t have means, and are really good players, they will be put through a process where they will get the opportunity to get a scholarship.” YSC Academy’s goal is to ensure that student-athletes who would otherwise be unable to attend YSC Academy are able to do so through financial assistance.
However, recent data indicates a significant increase in tuition costs. It doesn’t come without a price tag, with the tuition being a whopping $47,500 a year. Luckily, many students get scholarships to attend, and 35 percent of graduates move on to highly selective colleges and universities.

A Modern Learning Environment
The school's design resembles a Silicon Valley startup, featuring small, glass-windowed classrooms where students gather around conference tables. The glass-windowed classrooms are small and instead of desks the students sit around a conference table. As Graham has said, they tried to design something more like a Silicon Valley startup than a traditional school.
Balancing Academics and Athletics
Despite the intensive soccer training, academics remain a priority. While physical education is integrated into the school day, the academic workload aligns with that of other private schools. Dr. Ahmed-Lee believes that the training in the morning is actually beneficial to learning because research has shown it wakes up the brain.
Long-Term Goals and Expected Outcomes
The ultimate goal is for the Union to sign promising players from the academy within the next decade. The Union Academy develops top talent, providing a clear pathway from youth soccer to the professional level, including opportunities with the Union’s First Team and Union II. Competing in MLS Next from U-13 to U-18, players are immersed in a high-performance environment that demands excellence both on the field and in the classroom. However, the academy also aims to equip students with the skills and education necessary for college scholarships and success in other fields. “Ninety-five percent of the kids aren’t going to make it as a pro,” Graham said. “But they get a good solid education; they’ll get highly recruited, and we’re sending them to great schools. Men’s Soccer team in the World Cup. Those dreams may come into fruition in 2026, when Philly will be hosting the World Cup. Until then, the YSC Academy will continue to provide a soccer-centered education for its students.
