Is AAT Qualification equivalent to?

Accounting technician level qualification is similar to AAT qualification. AAT Level 2 is identical to a GCSE, AAT Level 3 to two A-Levels, and AAT Level 4 to a QCF Level 4 certification. You can acquire exemptions from degree programmes at over 30 universities in the UK if you have an AAT certificate.

A Deeper Dive into the AAT Level 4 Professional Diploma in Accounting

The AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting is the final step within the AAT pathway to becoming an accredited accountant. As this course is a Level 4 qualification, students should have completed the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting at Level 3 or possess a UK degree in Finance or Accounting. In order to complete this course, you must be able to undertake financial and management accounting tasks with ease and competence which were tested in the AAT Level 3 course.

Course Structure

The course is made up of three mandatory subjects, and five optional subjects. You’ll learn about drafting financial statements for single entities and consolidation of limited companies.

The mandatory units are:

  • Internal Accounting Systems and Controls

The optional units are:

  • Business Tax
  • Personal Tax
  • Audit and Assurance

Personal Tax (Optional Unit)

If you elect to study this unit you will learn the principles, regulations and rules that relate to tax systems as well as being able to calculate taxable income, work out income tax and national insurance contributions and account for capital gains tax.

Assessment

During the Level 4 qualification you will be required to take six examinations. Five of these will be computer-based assessments and there will be a final synoptic examination which will be held at an examination centre. Synoptic examinations have been introduced recently as part of the new accounting syllabus and it is used as a method of testing your knowledge across all units in the course. The programme has been developed around these synoptic assessments so you will be fully prepared before you are expected to sit the examination. Students will work with their tutor to decide when you are ready to sit your exam.

Students must successfully achieve the three mandatory unit and two optional unit assessments to achieve this qualification. These are normally completed at the end of each unit topic. All assessments in this qualification:

  • Are set and marked by AAT
  • Are computer-based
  • Are time-limited (each exam lasts for 120-180 minutes on this qualification)
  • Are scheduled by training providers or assessment venues
  • Take place at approved training providers and assessment venues under controlled conditions.

Unit assessments are available on demand throughout the year. Results for wholly computer-marked assessments are made available via MyAAT within 24 hours of submitting the assessment. Results from assessments with written elements can take up to 6 weeks.

You can take your exams at any time. All assessments on this level are computer-based exams (CBE) and must be bought separately from the course. You’ll be awarded a grade (pass, merit, or distinction) based on how you perform across the qualification.

New AAT remote online exams

Take your AAT exams from home, at a time that works for you, by purchasing an AAT remote invigilation exam from Kaplan. Your results will be released 15 days after your exam date.

Important information about remote online exams

You will be recorded for the whole duration of your exam, which will then be reviewed by the AAT for any irregularities. Please note that all exam fees are quoted and processed in British Pounds (GBP). Additionally, the exam times are presented in Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or British Summer Time (BST), depending on the time of year. You need to adjust for the time difference according to your local timezone. For your exam location, please ensure you choose 'AAT Remote Invigilation' from the available options.
