Understanding Acellus Academy's Structure and Accreditation

Acellus Academy operates as a private school based in Missouri and is regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACS WASC), the most widely accepted form of accreditation in the United States. Acellus Academy awards a high school diploma to students that fulfill the graduation requirements. As a private school, Acellus Academy charges tuition to cover its expenses. The tuition covers the registration and instructional expenses to enroll a student in Acellus Academy. Students are enrolled into courses automatically by age. Since each course is self-paced, students may enroll at any time during the calendar year.

In Pennsylvania, Acellus Academy is categorized as an “umbrella school”. An umbrella school is any alternative source of education that provides curriculum and oversight of homeschooled students to fulfill the requirements of state government. These entities are not registered with the PA Department of Education (PDE) and do not lead to a state-recognized diploma. At Acellus Academy, we simplify the evaluation process for Pennsylvania parents by providing comprehensive reporting tools.

The Parent's Role in Acellus Academy

As the primary facilitators of their child’s learning experience, parents play a crucial role in an Acellus Academy student’s success. The parent's responsibilities include:

  1. Supervision: Parents are responsible for overseeing the student’s learning experience. This involves ensuring the student attends regularly and completes weekly progress goals in each course.
  2. Tracking Progress: Through our easy-to-use Acellus platform, parents should sign in at least daily to monitor their child’s academic progress and scores. You can easily view your student’s progress through their courses from the parent interface (see below). By viewing your student’s progress regularly, you can make sure that they are progressing at the necessary speed to be finished by whatever completion date you would like (a general completion date would be the end of the school year, i.e. Following the minimum goal that we provide will help students to finish up in a regular school year.
  3. Interface with Acellus Academy: Parents should communicate with Acellus Academy to address any questions or concerns that may arise during the course of their child’s study.
  4. Follow Local Home Education Laws: Depending on their location, parents are also required to follow any regional home education regulations that apply to them. Each parent is responsible to ensure they are following applicable home education requirements for their region, which vary from state to state. It is important to notify your student’s previous school of your decision to enroll in Acellus Academy. Your local school district may also be able to provide resources and information regarding any applicable homeschooling requirements. To make sure you are satisfying all the local requirements in your state, we recommend checking with your school district to see if any reports would be required.

In Pennsylvania, Acellus Academy is categorized as an “umbrella school.” This means that the parent is still responsible for providing the local school district with a notarized affidavit or unsworn declaration statement and a written evaluation of the home education program completed by a qualified home school evaluator annually. Pennsylvania law does require homeschooled students to participate in state testing at certain grade levels. Participating in required testing is the responsibility of the parent. Parents may choose from a list of state-approved standardized assessments. For more information, please see the Home Education Guide on the PA Dept.

Understanding Acellus Academy's Educational Approach

Acellus Academy delivers online instruction through high-definition video lessons, made more engaging with multimedia and animations. In Acellus Academy, each course incorporates self-paced video lessons taught by some of the best teachers from across the nation. The lesson videos will focus on teaching one concept at a time. After each lesson, students will be tested on their understanding of the material that was just presented. In this way, no student is held back from advancing and no student is left behind or pushed through the material at too fast of a pace.

Self-Paced Learning and Flexibility

Acellus Academy offers fully self-paced learning, which is accessible 24/7. This means students can log in and learn at times that suit them best, without any mandatory time restrictions. This allows parents the flexibility to plan daily hours, breaks, and vacations as needed. Because Acellus is self-paced, you can plan breaks and vacations for your student’s schooling schedule. Since Acellus Academy is completely self-paced, we do not require students to sign in at specific times. This enables you to plan breaks and vacations as needed for your student. We give credit based on mastery of the course material. To keep your student on track, weekly progress goals are assigned in each class. Weekly progress goals are provided to help students maintain steady progress in each of their classes. On days when a student doesn’t log in, they will not be considered absent and their grade will not be impacted.

Credit Transfers and Transcripts

Credits earned while attending another accredited high school may be transferable. An official transcript will be required for the transfer of credits. Only credits with a grade of C- or greater are eligible for transfer. Acellus Academy reserves the right to decline the transfer of credit(s). If a student transfers from Acellus Academy to another school, the parent may request a transcript to show the courses completed while the student was enrolled at Acellus Academy. Transcripts may be requested through the system to provide a record of the courses completed by a student. The transcript will include the grade for each class and any credits awarded. Parents may request an electronic copy of a transcript at no cost. International transcripts will need to be reviewed before they can be accepted. After you have enrolled, you are welcome to set up an Education Plan and then contact us once you have uploaded the transcript.

Graduation Requirements and Diploma

Acellus Academy awards a high school diploma to students that fulfill the graduation requirements. Yes, students who complete the graduation requirements will receive a high school diploma from Acellus Academy. The Standard High School Diploma pathway aligns to the minimum credit requirements for graduation set by the State of Missouri.

Standard Pathway

● The Standard Pathway is recommended for students who plan to attend a community college or directly enter the workforce after high school.

Technology and Device Compatibility

Each student will need an Internet-connected device to access Acellus Academy courses. All of our course content is delivered online. Please note that students will need a computer or device that has Internet access. The Acellus program is compatible with many different devices including Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. The Acellus App is available in the App Store for most devices. Students may access their account on multiple devices. Students cannot sign in on more than one device simultaneously.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses and College Credit

Students may take AP (Advanced Placement) courses through Acellus Academy to gain high school credit. In order to receive a college credit recommendation for an AP course, your student will need to earn a passing score on the associated AP exam at a testing center approved by the College Board. If your student plans to take an AP exam, we recommend planning well in advance since there are specific testing windows that must be followed. There are other benefits of taking AP courses in addition to the opportunity of earning college credit.

PSAT Information

Since Acellus Academy is a distance education school, we do not administer the PSAT. However, students may register to take the PSAT through a local school. There are only a handful of days each year when the test is offered.

College Preparation and Guidance

Completion of high school does not guarantee acceptance into college. When evaluating an applicant, colleges will look at many factors including the student’s score on a standardized college entrance exam (e.g. SAT or ACT). As a first step, we recommend that students create a list of colleges/universities they are interested in attending. Letters of recommendation are required by many colleges for freshman applicants. The first step is to contact Acellus Academy by telephone and ask to speak to someone in the Guidance Department.

Account Management and Support

Parents can adjust their student’s course list through the parent interface. To access your parent account, first, download the Acellus App on each device that you will want to sign in as a parent, such as your desktop or tablet. Parents can reset their PIN by going to sign in through the Acellus App. Upon registration into our online school, your student will be assigned an Acellus ID and password. If your student forgets their login information, you can retrieve it through the Acellus App by logging in as a parent. Yes, you can create your own user ID and password for a student account. A password that is unique to the student may be easier for them to remember. The “Easy Sign In” will need to be configured on every device that the student will be using to sign into the Acellus App.

Pausing or Canceling Enrollment

Once the student’s account is paused, you will no longer be billed for any payments. All of the student’s coursework will be archived in the Acellus system. Acellus Academy allows parents to cancel their account at any time. No, our tuition is based on a monthly or annual plan.
