Alabama Alumni Dominating the NFL: A Comprehensive List of Active Players

The University of Alabama has long been a powerhouse in college football, consistently producing top-tier talent that transitions to the National Football League. As training camps approach in mid-July, numerous roster adjustments have taken place, impacting the representation of Alabama alumni in the NFL. While some players have departed from active rosters, a significant number of former Crimson Tide stars continue to make their mark on the professional stage.

Recent Roster Changes

Several notable changes have affected the count of Alabama alumni in the NFL. Linebacker CJ Mosley, a seasoned veteran, retired from the NFL on June 19, concluding an 11-year career with the New York Jets. Running back Jase McClellan, selected as the No. 186 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, was released by the Atlanta Falcons on June 17. Additionally, undrafted free agent long snapper Kneeland Hibbet was waived by the Miami Dolphins on May 10.

These departures bring the total number of active Alabama players in the NFL to 71. This figure underscores the program's remarkable ability to develop and send players to the highest level of professional football.

Alabama's Consistent NFL Dominance

The University of Alabama's presence in the NFL is not a recent phenomenon. For years, BamaCentral has meticulously maintained its "Bama in the NFL Database," providing continuous updates on the status of former players in the league, including active and inactive players, their current status, and team affiliations.

One significant milestone occurs annually during opening weekend when NFL rosters are finalized for Week 1. This is when the league officially breaks down the active players, excluding practice squads and those on injury lists, providing a definitive snapshot of Alabama's representation.

At the start of the 2024 season, Alabama led all universities with 61 former players on active rosters. This marked the eighth consecutive season that the Crimson Tide held at least a share of this prestigious status. The dominance of Alabama and LSU in this regard is notable, as the last time a program not coached by Nick Saban topped the list was USC in 2013. It took several years for Alabama to surpass LSU, even though Saban only coached in Baton Rouge for four seasons, highlighting the long-term impact of his coaching prowess.

The Ever-Evolving Landscape

The landscape of Alabama alumni in the NFL is constantly changing. With Amari Cooper's retirement, the Crimson Tide's longest-tenured veterans in the league are now players from the 2016 NFL Draft, including Ryan Kelly, Derrick Henry, A'Shawn Robinson, and Jarran Reed. This transition signifies the end of an era, as key contributors from the 2009, 2011, and 2012 national championship teams have retired from professional football.

NFL Draft: A Pathway to Professional Football

Each NFL team aims to bolster its roster through the annual NFL Draft. The draft's rules were last revised in 2009. The team with the poorest record from the previous season gets the first pick, followed by the next-worst team, and so on. Teams that did not participate in the playoffs are ranked based on their regular-season record, with ties broken by strength of schedule. Playoff teams are positioned after non-playoff teams, according to their elimination round (wild card, division, conference, and Super Bowl).

Before the merger agreements in 1966, the American Football League (AFL) competed directly with the NFL and held its own separate draft. This resulted in a bidding war for top prospects between the two leagues. As part of the merger agreement on June 8, 1966, the two leagues conducted a "common draft" with multiple rounds.
