Alabama's Freshman Wide Receiver Prospects: A Glimpse into the Future
As Alabama gears up for the 2025 college football season, the spotlight shines brightly on its burgeoning talent at the wide receiver position. While established names like sophomore sensation Ryan Williams and senior leader Germie Bernard command attention, the emergence of promising freshmen adds an intriguing layer to the Crimson Tide's offensive arsenal.
The Current Landscape of Alabama's Receiving Corps
The Alabama receiving corps is considered one of the best in the nation. CBS Sports' Will Backus ranked the group as the nation's third-best heading into 2025, behind Ohio State and Clemson.
Ryan Williams, who had 48 catches for 865 yards, leads the pack. Germie Bernard, Alabama's leading receiver in catches with 50 receptions for 794 yards, is back for his senior year. The team also added former Miami Hurricanes threat Isaiah Horton, who had 56 catches for 616 yards, in the transfer portal.
Backus noted the team's depth, saying, "The Crimson Tide have plenty of quality depth to lean on outside the expected starting trio [Williams, Bernard, Horton]. Jalen Hale is working his way back from injury, former five-star prospect Jaylen Mbakwe is repping full time at wide receiver, and freshman Lotzeir Brooks is climbing the depth chart after turning heads in the spring."
Lotzeir Brooks: The Explosive Newcomer
One freshman who has been generating considerable buzz is Lotzeir Brooks from Millville, New Jersey. Brooks is a former four-star wide receiver. Kalen DeBoer has praised Brooks, saying, "Lotzeir's built up a lot of momentum here in the last three weeks to four weeks. He had a nice spring ball and made some plays on Saturday. And so, you know, got some confidence in him. Made guys miss and made big catches on third down. In the first game, he played with some aggression on some special teams plays that we were hoping for, and he came through."

Listed at 5-foot-9, 188 pounds, Brooks brings a different dimension to the receiving corps. DeBoer noted that Brooks' "starting point" has been in the slot. He praised the New Jersey native’s body control and ability downfield.
"Lotzeir is really explosive," DeBoer said. "They've both (Brooks and Meadows) got a lot to learn when it comes to just feeling comfortable in the offense, and when that happens, then being quarterback-friendly and being where you're supposed to be, especially on time. But Lotzeir's got some of those instincts. Sometimes it's hard to find guys. It's not hard to find him. And he can finish those plays. When a ball is in the air, he can get that little burst to get underneath of it. Those ones that are just off the fingertips, it seems like he's finding a way to haul them in. Got that little extra juice and can make good outside-the-body type of catches."
After Ryan Williams was out with a concussion, The New Jersey product started against ULM. Brooks had four receptions for 48 yards against the Warhawks.
Derek Meadows: The Tall Target
Another freshman wideout to watch is Derek Meadows from Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. Meadows is a four-star prospect. Meadows, who stands 6-foot-5, is part of a larger trend of Alabama’s receivers getting taller for this season.
DeBoer said he liked what he saw so far from the Nevada native. "Derek, when you look at him out there, you can pick him out anywhere, right?" DeBoer said. "He's long and has a presence about him. I saw a one-on-one rep today that was really neat to see him use his body. Sometimes guys that are like that, they've got that presence, but they don't use it. And he used it. Really got a long wingspan, so just get the ball in the vicinity, and he'll come down with it."

Rico Scott: The Rising Star
Malachi Moore singled out Rico Scott as the player who impressed him the most. “The biggest one would probably be Rico Scott for me,” Moore said. It’s not that Scott has changed much to Moore. The wide receiver has always been a hard worker, Moore said. He’s never complained about playing time, and always kept his head down, did what he was told and put that extra work in. It’s what Scott’s day-to-day grind, which Moore knew well, what it turned into. “I’ve just seen him really just take his game to another level,” Moore said.
Milroe's Perspective
Jalen Milroe also praised the receiving corps. “We have a lot of great talent in the receiver room,” Milroe said, adding running back Jam Miller and NFL-bound tight ends CJ Dippre and Robbie Ouzts into the mix too. “We have a special group, and it was just a lot of fun to show the script we had been working.”
Milroe was impressed by Horton. “Number one (thing) I like about him is his approach to the game of football, and him being able to be detail-oriented in the way he approaches the game,” Milroe said. “He has good hands, good feet and I like how he approaches football. And I can see that with his passion for the game.”
As Milroe goes to the NFL, and Williams approaches his highly-anticipated Year 2, Milroe can’t help but look back at the progress he made just with being around the Alabama football program, progress he expects from Williams. “The more you play football, the more you are around the University of Alabama, you are going to build and get better,” Milroe said. “And so I’m excited to see what his future looks like in the coming years because this is someone who loves football and someone who is very talented and unique in his own way. He’s definitely going to continue to elevate and build his game.”
Alabama's History of Impactful Freshman Receivers
The Crimson Tide have a rich history of true freshman wide receivers making an immediate impact. Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, Calvin Ridley, DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, and Ryan Williams all burst onto the scene early in their careers.

This group of wide receivers also shares another glowing similarity. Jones kicked off this tradition when he pulled in five receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown in 2008 when the Tide defeated the Bulldogs in Athens in one of the most monumental wins of the Saban era. Cooper one-upped Jones in 2012 in the SEC Championship Game when he had 128 yards and one touchdown on eight receptions as a true freshman. Ridley left his fingerprints all over the 2015 Alabama vs.
