Alliance for Quality Education: Championing Equitable Education in New York

The Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) stands as a resolute coalition, mobilizing communities across New York State to uphold the promise of a high-quality public school education for all students, irrespective of their zip code. AQE's work is rooted in the belief that the well-being of communities is fundamentally dependent upon the degree to which all children receive a quality education.

Mission and Core Values

The core mission of the Alliance for Quality Education is to ensure that New York State delivers on its commitment to provide a high-quality public education to every student, regardless of their background or location. AQE is working to end the systemic racism and economic oppression in New York’s public schools that continues to shortchange generations of Black, Brown, low-income and immigrant students.

AQE's approach involves combining legislative and policy expertise with grassroots organizing to advance strategies that have been proven to lead to student success. They strive to create a powerful public demand for a high-quality education system that serves all students equitably.

AQE's principle is to build powerful alliances and join with others to affect change. Its focus has evolved to engage in the promotion and sponsorship of educational, recreational, cultural, and social service programs and activities.

Historical Context and the Campaign for Fiscal Equity

The Alliance for Quality Education (AQE) was born to give a voice to parents and community members around the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit and calling for a quality education for their schools. Click here for a brief history of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity. The Story: After ten years of broken promises on school funding, the Alliance for Quality Education & Public Policy & Education Fund are collaborating with partners throughout New York State to organize Ed Walk for CFE. We will be walking for 9 days from NYC to Albany to demand that the Governor and State legislature meet its obligation to our children. The final trial in the landmark Campaign for Fiscal Equity case was October 2016. Ten years later our students are still owed $3.9 billion in Foundation Aid. We are walking all the way to Albany to demand full and fair funding for our public schools.

The Imperative of Community-Based Accountability

AQE's focus is to bring Community-Based Accountability to public education. It begins with changes in attitude and person-to-person relationships that occur when individuals decide that schools are important. It is sustained through actions that foster mutual understanding and trust. Everyone in the public school system says that parent and public involvement is a crucial requirement for our schools to be successful. Parents are responsible for the education of their children and are the critical factor for making good schools. Parents have the purest motive of all stakeholders in the public education system. Informed parents are able to recognize problems. Involved parents take leadership roles in their children's education.

Addressing Systemic Inequities

As New York’s schools grapple with the complexity and uncertainty of reopening amid the coronavirus, adhering to health and safety requirements is fundamental - but insufficient. As school districts plan to reopen in the fall - whether in person, remote, or a combination of the two - and beyond, one thing is certain: our students deserve a quality education, and that basic right is being denied to too many Black, Brown and low-income students. The quality of our public schools is as crucial to our future as clean air and clean water. Good schools help create neighborhoods where people want to live, determine the employability and earning power of our students and attract businesses with good paying jobs. The reality is that too many children are falling behind. About 50% of the students in public schools are not proficient in the gateway skills of reading or math.

Financial Support and Transparency

AQE accepts financial support from civic-minded individuals and philanthropic organizations. Sign in or create an account to view Form(s) 990 for 2024, 2023 and 2022.
