Unlocking Your Potential: The Multifaceted Benefits of Alpha Phi Sigma Alumni
For criminal justice majors, the path to a fulfilling career is paved with academic excellence, leadership development, and networking opportunities. Alpha Phi Sigma (APS), the national criminal justice honor society, offers a wealth of benefits to its alumni, extending far beyond graduation. This article explores the numerous advantages of remaining an active member of Alpha Phi Sigma after completing your degree.
Academic Excellence and Recognition
Alpha Phi Sigma fosters a culture of academic excellence, encouraging members to maintain high standards throughout their collegiate careers. Membership requires meeting specific GPA and class requirements, motivating students to excel in their studies. Even if a scholarship isn't directly tied to APS membership, maintaining a good GPA to qualify or stay in the honor society can indirectly lead to scholarship opportunities and reduce the need for student loans.
Honor Regalia
Upon graduation, members can proudly display their academic achievements by wearing special Alpha Phi Sigma regalia. This regalia can be added over any other cords earned for good grades or other accomplishments, signifying dedication and success in the field of criminal justice. Even later in life, if an alumnus becomes a professor, they can continue to wear the regalia during graduation ceremonies. Student members who have graduated may purchase Honor Regalia directly from Headquarters and must provide a transcript.
Awards
Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes outstanding achievements through awards presented to members annually or for lifetime achievements. Earning such an award is a significant accomplishment that can be highlighted on a resume, demonstrating dedication and excellence in the field of criminal justice. These awards remain valuable long after graduation.
Leadership Development
One of the most significant Alpha Phi Sigma benefits is the opportunity to develop leadership skills. Participating in chapter activities, organizing events, and taking on leadership roles within the society provide invaluable experience in communication, teamwork, and project management. These skills are highly sought after by employers and can help alumni stand out in the competitive job market.

Alumni Circles and Mentorship
Alpha Phi Sigma Alumni Circles foster a culture of academic excellence while maintaining member involvement through unity, leadership, and community service. The Alumni Circle helps promote Alpha Phi Sigma through encouragement of its members and collegiate chapters by mentoring, speaking engagements, service projects, fundraisers, and other Criminal Justice or related field activities. You may join an existing Alumni Circle, even if you're not in the area, or you may charter an Alumni Circle in your area.
Finding a mentor is another significant advantage of joining Alpha Phi Sigma. While in college, you might be able to meet a graduate student and convince them to mentor you. A good mentor is someone who has been in your shoes before. They might decide to help you figure out which classes to take and what else you should do to get your dream job.
Networking and Community
Alpha Phi Sigma provides a strong sense of community and networking opportunities for its members. Through meetings, events, and conferences, students can connect with peers, faculty, and professionals in the criminal justice field. This networking can lead to valuable mentorships, career advice, and job opportunities.
Conferences and Events
One of the most significant Alpha Phi Sigma benefits is the opportunity to attend events and conferences held by the society. These gatherings provide a platform to exchange business cards with potential employers and mentors, expanding professional networks. While you can meet a lot of people at your school's Alpha Phi Sigma meetings, you'll meet more people at conferences. Even outside of conferences and other events, you'll get to meet a lot of people through Alpha Phi Sigma. So even if you're a freshman or sophomore, you'll meet seniors and perhaps even graduate students.
Alumni Circles
Graduating doesn't mean you can't participate in Alpha Phi Sigma. These circles have physical locations, so you may want to start one if there isn't one near you. If you move to a new city, joining or forming an alumni circle will make it easy to meet friends and colleagues. Even if you don't get a job from the circle, you can make friends.

Career Advancement
Alpha Phi Sigma membership can significantly enhance career prospects. Adding the honor society to a resume demonstrates a commitment to the field of criminal justice and a dedication to academic excellence. Furthermore, the leadership skills and networking connections gained through Alpha Phi Sigma can provide a competitive edge in the job market.
Career Preparation
Whether or not you find a mentor, joining Alpha Phi Sigma can help you prepare for your career. As you get closer to graduation, you can add those unique experiences to your resume. For example, if you helped organize an event for Alpha Phi Sigma, use that experience to show how you can lead a team. But you will have a list of experiences that others won't have. When it comes to career preparation, you should determine what type of job you want. Either way, getting to know people through Alpha Phi Sigma can help you compare your options. You might learn that a job you thought you wanted isn't the right fit for you. Fortunately, you can take a lot of different paths with a criminal justice degree.
Graduate School Opportunities
Some criminal justice careers, such as being a lawyer, require a graduate or professional degree. First, you can figure out what graduate degree might be best for your career. Being able to put Alpha Phi Sigma on your resume can also help you stand out to graduate school recruiters. Then, you can continue to meet new students and professors at your new university.
Job Boards
Searching for a job isn't always the easiest task. While you may still find jobs that don't interest you, these boards have a much narrower selection of positions. You won't have to worry as much about if you meet the qualifications.
Staying Connected and Giving Back
Alpha Phi Sigma offers various avenues for alumni to stay connected with the society and contribute to its mission. Alumni can serve as mentors to current students, participate in alumni circles, and volunteer their time and expertise to support chapter activities. This involvement allows alumni to give back to the organization that helped shape their careers and contribute to the development of future criminal justice professionals.
