The Amity Internship Program: A World of Opportunity for Heritage Elementary and Host Families

The Amity Internship Program offers a unique and enriching experience for both Heritage Elementary School and families within its community. By bringing foreign teaching interns to the USA, specifically to Heritage Elementary, the program fosters cultural exchange, provides valuable assistance to the school's staff, and creates lasting bonds between interns and host families. Heritage Elementary actively participates in this program and is looking to hire three interns for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year.

A Mutually Beneficial Partnership

The Amity Internship Program is designed to be mutually beneficial. Young adults from universities in other countries, who are studying English and/or Education, participate in an immersive experience in the United States. These interns undergo a rigorous interview process in their home countries to qualify for their student visas. For many, this is their first time in the United States, presenting an exciting opportunity for personal and professional growth.

For Heritage Elementary, the program brings a wealth of benefits. The interns provide needed help and instruction in the classroom, allowing teachers to offer more individualized attention to students and work in small groups. The presence of a second adult in the classroom enhances the learning environment and supports the teachers' efforts.

Furthermore, the interns expose students to different cultures, dialects, and native speakers, broadening their perspectives and fostering a sense of global awareness. Learning about different cultures, communities, traditions, music, arts, and dances helps students see the world as a global place, fostering diversity and respect. This exposure is particularly valuable at Spanish Immersion Elementary Schools, where the interns contribute to a richer and more authentic language learning experience.

The Host Family Experience: A Cultural Exchange

A cornerstone of the Amity Internship Program is the involvement of host families. These families provide a welcoming home and support system for the interns during their stay, creating an invaluable opportunity for cultural exchange and personal connection.

Requirements and Expectations

Families within the Heritage community are encouraged to consider hosting an intern. There is no requirement for speaking Spanish in the home, making the program accessible to a wide range of families. The program requires that host families provide a private bedroom for the intern. There are no requirements for a private bathroom or kitchen. The host family will also provide meals for the intern (the school will provide lunch for the intern on school days). Host families are also asked to provide daily transportation to the school for the intern. The host family will not receive any financial compensation for hosting, however the interns are required to pay for all other personal needs outside of room, meals and transportation to school. Families may host for the entire school year or may host for half of the school year. Many interns like to have two family experiences, so the school would love to find more than one host family for each intern, if possible. The interns arrive a few days before school starts in August and return home after school ends in June. Families may choose to host from August-December or January - June.

The Rewards of Hosting

While hosting an intern requires a commitment of time and resources, the rewards are immeasurable. Host families gain a unique opportunity to learn about another culture firsthand, broaden their perspectives, and form lasting relationships.

One family shared their experience of hosting Raquel, the very first Amity intern at Heritage Elementary: "Having Raquel in our home was such a positive experience for all of us. She taught us all about Spain and the different customs and foods that they have there. She cooked her traditional dinners for us on quite a few occasions and she was always willing to help our son with his Spanish. She felt so much like part of our family that we even took her on vacation. We loved the experience of having an amity aide in our home."

Another family described their experience with their aide, Clara: "Our aide, Clara, was respectful, kind, and became a fun, important member of our family. She was willing to provide us with some cultural experiences from her home, including foods and holiday traditions. That was very fun for our family. She helped our daughter, who is in the French program, with her language skills. We still keep in contact with her and love that she became such a good friend to us. We would encourage anyone who is thinking about hosting an aide to go for it!"

These testimonials highlight the transformative power of the Amity Internship Program, not only for the interns but also for the host families who open their homes and hearts.

A Glimpse into the Life of an Amity Intern

One family shared their experience with Gaby, their Amity intern from El Salvador: "As soon as Gaby was assigned to our family, we skyped with her and loved her immediately. We got her room ready and ran around stocking it with things we thought she would need. We’ve had a blast starting to show her the city! We’ve gone to Hola Arepa, to Copper Cow, dancing at Champps (thanks Mark Miller Band), to Starbucks, to the Mall of America, to a performance at the high school, and up to our lake cabin. We’ve gone to Target and to several of our local grocery stores. We’ve shown her American food and she has taught us how to make pupusas! We have attempted to show her real life here in the United States."

This glimpse into Gaby's experience illustrates the excitement and adventure that awaits Amity interns as they immerse themselves in American culture and share their own traditions with their host families and the wider community.

Spreading the Word

For those who are unable to host, there are still ways to support the Amity Internship Program. Spreading the word to others who might be interested in hosting is a valuable contribution. Sharing information about the program with friends, family, and neighbors can help ensure that Heritage Elementary continues to benefit from this enriching cultural exchange.

Industry-Academia Collaboration

The Amity Internship Program extends beyond elementary schools, fostering collaboration between industry and academia. The handshaking of OHSL and Amity School of Engineering and Technology, Noida, signifies an important milestone in strengthening this collaboration. The primary area of collaboration is student internship and mentoring, providing valuable opportunities for students to gain practical experience and develop their skills.
