Quinn Ewers: From High School Phenom to College Football 25 Cover Star

Quinn Ewers, a name synonymous with exceptional talent and high expectations in American football, has rapidly ascended from a highly-touted high school recruit to a prominent figure in college football and now, a cover athlete for EA Sports' College Football 25. His journey, marked by bold decisions and impressive performances, has solidified his status as one of the most exciting quarterbacks to watch.

A Storied High School Career

Ewers' football journey began in Southlake, Texas, where he quickly established himself as a prodigious talent at Southlake Carroll High School. Even before his senior year, Ewers had already garnered national attention and was considered one of the greatest quarterback recruits of all time. He was a unanimous five-star quarterback, showcasing his athletic abilities not only on the football field but also on the baseball diamond in the spring.

According to 247Sports, only Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, and Bryce Young were rated higher as quarterbacks, and only 11 players across all positions were ever rated higher than Ewers coming out of high school. In 22 career games, he completed 450 of 643 passes (70 percent) for 6,445 passing yards, 73 passing touchdowns and just eight interceptions, adding 701 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He earned accolades such as All-American in 2020, finalist for the Landry Award, second-team 6A All-State in 2019, and unanimous MVP of District 5-6A and first-team all-district in 2019.

Originally the top player in the class of 2022, Ewers made the pivotal decision to reclassify to the class of 2021, effectively skipping his senior season to enroll early at Ohio State.

The Ohio State Chapter

Ewers initially signed with Ohio State, choosing the Buckeyes over a multitude of offers from powerhouse programs like Alabama and Texas. The move was highly publicized, especially considering the burgeoning Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities that were becoming available to college athletes.

Transfer to Texas

After a brief stint at Ohio State, Ewers entered the transfer portal and ultimately chose to return to his home state, joining the Texas Longhorns. This decision was significant, as it marked a homecoming for the Southlake native and an opportunity to lead a program looking to reclaim its status as a national title contender.

Leading the Texas Longhorns

Ewers' arrival in Austin brought renewed hope and excitement to the Longhorns program. He was named the starting quarterback in August 2022. In 2023, among returning Power Four quarterbacks, only Georgia’s Carson Beck and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel had more passing yards than Ewers. His performance helped propel Texas back into the national spotlight.

College Football 25 Cover Star

Ewers' impact on college football has been so significant that he has been chosen as one of the cover athletes for EA Sports' College Football 25, alongside Michigan running back Donovan Edwards and Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter. This recognition underscores his status as one of the most exciting and marketable players in the game.

Daryl Holt, SVP and Group GM at EA SPORTS, emphasized the significance of featuring these athletes: “Donovan, Quinn and Travis are extraordinary talents who impressed and entertained millions of college football fans on the field last season and are poised to do so again this year. We’re proud to be able to incorporate thousands of current athletes in College Football 25, and featuring this trio of playmakers and their iconic college programs on the cover is a perfect fit as we usher in a new era for EA SPORTS and college football.”

Ewers himself expressed his excitement about being featured on the cover: “To represent the burnt orange on the real and virtual gridirons is such an honor."
