Animal Education and Rescue: A Lifeline for Animals and People in Libertyville
Animal Education and Rescue (AEAR) is a non-profit humane society based in Lake County, Illinois, dedicated to rescuing animals and enriching the lives of both animals and people. This organization operates as a foster-based rescue, relying on donations and a dedicated team of volunteers to fulfill its mission. AEAR is an Illinois not for profit 501(c)(3) organization committed to helping countless numbers of animals & people through rescue, education & therapy. All of our work is done through donations and our great team of volunteers.
A Multifaceted Approach to Animal Welfare
AEAR distinguishes itself through its comprehensive approach to animal welfare, which extends beyond simply finding homes for animals. The organization focuses its efforts towards helping the community through its main programs--Humane Investigations, Pet Therapy and Education. AEAR prides itself on its local focus, committing most of its time and energy to helping the pets and people of Lake County and the nearby surrounding areas.
Rescue and Adoption
At its core, AEAR is committed to rescuing animals in need and finding them loving forever homes. From dogs and cats to birds and bunnies, AEAR strives to provide a haven for a variety of animals. Since our animals are all fostered we know a lot about their personalities, their likes and their dislikes. Because AEAR operates as a foster-based organization, they gain valuable insights into each animal's personality, likes, and dislikes, ensuring a well-suited match with potential adopters. Since we do not have a shelter we are always in need of good foster homes. Fostering allows us to save more animals and allows us to learn about them so we can place them in just the right forever home.
The Importance of Fostering
Fostering plays a crucial role in AEAR's rescue efforts. Since AEAR does not have a physical shelter, the organization relies heavily on foster homes to provide temporary care for animals awaiting adoption. Fostering allows AEAR to save more animals and allows them to learn about them so we can place them in just the right forever home. By opening their homes to animals in need, fosters provide a safe and nurturing environment, enabling AEAR to learn more about each animal's unique needs and personality.
Education and Community Outreach
Education is a cornerstone of AEAR's mission. The organization recognizes the importance of educating the public about responsible pet ownership, animal welfare issues, and the benefits of the human-animal bond. AEAR offers a variety of educational programs and resources, including workshops, seminars, and online content. Donations for these educational programs are always appreciated. These initiatives aim to promote compassion, prevent animal cruelty, and foster a more informed and responsible community of pet owners.

Pet Therapy
Recognizing the therapeutic benefits of animals, AEAR incorporates pet therapy into its programs. Through carefully supervised interactions with animals, individuals can experience reduced stress, improved mood, and increased social interaction.
Addressing Common Concerns
Volunteer Orientation and Costs
AEAR requires prospective volunteers to attend an orientation session to learn about the organization's mission, goals, and philosophies. The new volunteer orientation that takes place once a month is the best way to learn more about us…our mission, goals and philosophies. This orientation ensures that volunteers are well-prepared to support AEAR's work and that they align with the organization's values.
The orientation fee helps to defray the costs associated with running the program, including room rental, handouts, and t-shirts. Unfortunately everything for us costs money ( as it is with any business…non profit or not) including the orientation. We have to pay for the room rental, the handouts as well as the t-shirt that we provide. As it says in the description on our web site if it is a hardship a person does not have to make a donation for the orientation. The concept is to help to defer costs of the evening so that we can instead use the money we would have to pay for the evening on running the organization…the largest expense being the animals in our care, especially the long term, special needs animals. However, AEAR recognizes that financial constraints may pose a barrier for some individuals. As it says in the description on our web site if it is a hardship a person does not have to make a donation for the orientation. In such cases, the organization offers waivers or alternative arrangements to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate.
Finding the Right Fit
AEAR emphasizes the importance of finding the right fit between volunteers and the organization. As much as you are looking for the right organization to volunteer for we too are looking for the right volunteers that would compliment and support our philosophies, services and beliefs. Thus the reason for the orientation where people can get to know us, and us them, to see if we are all a good fit for each other. The orientation process allows both AEAR and prospective volunteers to assess whether their values and goals align. If you don't want to help/work with people and only want to work with animals we are probably not your type of organization. This mutual evaluation ensures that volunteers are placed in roles that best utilize their skills and interests, while also supporting AEAR's mission effectively.
Overcoming Challenges
Animal rescue work is not without its challenges. AEAR faces the constant struggle of limited resources and an overwhelming number of animals in need. It never ends. We are constantly being bombarded by people begging us and pleading with us to take animals. We do not have an unlimited place for animals to go. Yet oftentimes, people think we have some sort of special place that animals can go to.

The Emotional Toll
Rescuers often experience emotional distress as they witness the suffering of animals and grapple with the difficult decisions of limited resources. Finding a balance between home life and work as an animal rescue is virtually impossible. People are constantly needing something at all hours of the day and night. Creating boundaries and sticking to them is nearly impossible.
The Importance of Empathy and Support
AEAR encourages the community to support animal rescue organizations through donations, volunteer work, and acts of empathy. If nothing else, be more empathetic towards people in rescue. Pitch in when you can, donate money, and be a good human in general. By working together, we can create a more compassionate and supportive environment for animals and the people who dedicate their lives to helping them.

AEAR offers a range of volunteer opportunities to suit different interests and abilities.
The Volunteer Application and Agreement
Prospective volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application and agreement, which outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and risks associated with volunteering. I have read and understand all of the statements above. Further, I understand that although AEAR takes reasonable care to screen the pets, it makes no guarantees relating to the pets health, behavior or actions. I understand that any contact my child(ren) have with a pet, is done at my own risk. I accept full responsibility for any and all expenses incurred during my child(ren) tenure as a representative for AEAR, except for those pre-approved by AEAR, if applicable. I have accurately completed this Volunteer Application and Agreement and I have read the above warnings and appreciate the risks involved in working with pets.
