Navigating ASU Student Insurance Plans: A Comprehensive Guide

Choosing a health insurance plan is an important step for college students and their families. Student health plans can be a valuable solution, offering added benefits designed specifically for students. This article provides a comprehensive overview of ASU student insurance plans, including eligibility, coverage, costs, and resources.

ASU Health Services: Access for All Students

Regardless of health insurance status, all students are eligible to utilize ASU Health Services. This ensures that every student has access to essential healthcare resources while pursuing their education.

ASU's Affordable Medical Insurance Policy

In collaboration with the Arizona Board of Regents and ASU Health Services, ASU offers an affordable, top-tiered medical insurance policy for students. This plan is designed to provide group coverage to students who are currently uninsured, seeking a less expensive alternative, or require an Arizona provider network.

Key Features:

  • Access to Health and Counseling Services: The insurance provides access to health and counseling services at any ASU Health Service location.
  • Primary Care Requirement: Students on the United Healthcare Student Resources plan are required to receive their primary care through ASU Health Services and obtain a referral to an off-campus provider.

Understanding Accepted Health Insurance Plans

ASU accepts many health insurance plans. To determine if your current plan is accepted at ASU, contact your provider. This ensures you have clarity on your coverage options while attending ASU.

Enrollment and Costs

All students must have ASU-approved health insurance coverage at all times while enrolled. Upon completing New Student Registration, you will be automatically enrolled in your chosen insurance plan. The cost of health insurance will be charged to your My ASU student account.

Health Insurance for Global Launch Students

Health Insurance for Global Launch students is provided by United Healthcare Student Resources. Global Launch students will receive their insurance card with a customer service telephone number printed on it as proof of insurance.

Sponsored Students and Insurance Coverage

Sponsored students with ASU-approved sponsored insurance coverage will be exempt from being enrolled in ASU's Health Insurance plan for the current semester. This ensures that sponsored students can utilize their existing coverage while meeting ASU's health insurance requirements.

Benefits of Student Health Plans

Student plans offer lower rates, partly because they’re based on a younger, healthier population and provide coverage for a limited time (just while they’re in school). Looking at all of the options may help you find a solution that works best for your student and your family.

Mandatory CISI Health Insurance for Global Education Programs

All students participating in an ASU Global Education program outside of the United States will be enrolled in a mandatory CISI health insurance plan (see policy details). ASU’s CISI insurance policy will provide you with services and protection in the event you become ill or injured while abroad.

Important Considerations:

  • Coverage Area: These benefits are not available to ASU Global Education programs within the United States.
  • Emergency Procedures: If you are involved in a medical emergency abroad, go immediately to the nearest physician or hospital and then contact CISI’s 24/7 assistance provider, On Call International. The telephone number is +1 (603) 952-2660 (Collect - Outside the US).
  • Prior Authorization: If possible, remember to call On Call International before you seek medical treatment so that payment can be arranged for your services. If you do not contact On Call International prior to your appointment, you may need to pay upfront and get reimbursed by submitting a claim.
  • Coverage Dates: ASU’s CISI insurance policy will cover you beginning one to two days prior to the published program start date and will conclude one day after the published program end date.

Trip Cancellation Insurance Recommendation

The ASU Global Education Office (GEO) strongly urges all of our travelers to obtain Trip Cancellation/Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance to safeguard against losses or penalties in case they are unable to travel for any reason (including failure to obtain a visa, travel restrictions related to COVID-19, or any other reason), or in case the Program is canceled or its dates are changed.

Understanding the Nuances of Student Health Insurance

Navigating student health insurance requires careful consideration of various factors. Unlike traditional health insurance plans, student health plans are often designed to cater to the specific needs and circumstances of college students. This section explores some of the nuances and considerations associated with student health insurance.

Limited Coverage Period

Student health plans typically provide coverage for a limited time, usually coinciding with the academic year. This means that coverage begins at the start of the semester and ends at the end of the semester or academic year. Students need to be aware of these coverage periods and ensure they have continuous coverage if they remain enrolled in school.

Network Restrictions

Some student health plans may have network restrictions, meaning that students are required to seek medical care from providers within the plan's network. Out-of-network care may not be covered or may be subject to higher out-of-pocket costs. It's essential for students to understand the network restrictions of their plan and ensure that they have access to in-network providers in the area where they attend school.

Coordination of Benefits

Students who are covered under both a student health plan and their parents' health insurance plan may need to coordinate benefits between the two plans. Coordination of benefits determines which plan pays first and which plan pays second. Understanding how coordination of benefits works can help students avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Pre-existing Conditions

Some student health plans may have limitations or exclusions for pre-existing conditions. A pre-existing condition is a health condition that a student had before enrolling in the health plan. Students with pre-existing conditions should carefully review the terms of the student health plan to understand how their condition will be covered.

Mental Health Coverage

Mental health is an important aspect of overall health, and student health plans often include coverage for mental health services. However, the scope and limitations of mental health coverage can vary widely between plans. Students should review the mental health coverage provisions of their plan to ensure that they have access to the mental health services they need.

Prescription Drug Coverage

Prescription drug coverage is another important consideration for students. Student health plans typically include coverage for prescription drugs, but the cost and availability of prescription drugs can vary between plans. Students should review the prescription drug formulary of their plan to understand which drugs are covered and what the cost-sharing arrangements are.

International Students

International students studying in the United States often have unique health insurance needs. Many universities require international students to enroll in a student health plan that meets certain minimum requirements. International students should carefully review the health insurance requirements of their university and choose a plan that provides adequate coverage for their needs.
