Navigating ASU Tuition Payments: A Comprehensive Guide

Paying for college can be a complex process. Arizona State University (ASU) offers various options and deadlines to help students manage their tuition and fees. This article provides a comprehensive overview of ASU's tuition payment calendar, payment methods, financial aid, and important deadlines to help students successfully navigate their financial obligations.

Understanding Tuition and Fees

Tuition is the cost you pay to attend classes and earn your degree. When someone says, "Tuition is $12,000 dollars," that usually means it is $12,000 for the entire year (i.e., fall and spring semester - summer sessions tuition is usually additional). Along with tuition costs, students usually have to pay other fees. These can include athletic, lab, and technology fees. It is important to note that tuition does not include costs such as books, campus housing, and food. Most students at ASU take advantage of financial aid to help cover these costs.

Payment Methods

ASU provides several convenient options for students to make tuition payments:

  • eCheck: This is ASU's preferred payment method and is free. You will need your bank's routing number and account number, which can be found on the bottom of your checks or obtained from your financial institution.
  • Credit or Debit Card: ASU does not directly accept credit or debit card payments for tuition and student account charges but has arranged for a third-party processor to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express payments online through QuikPAY. The processor charges a non-refundable 2.5% service fee for domestic credit and debit card payments and 4.25% for international credit and debit card payments.
  • Flywire: International students can make payments safely and securely through Flywire. With Flywire, you can make payments from banks worldwide with favorable exchange rates, typically in your home currency. Note that Flywire is the only vendor authorized by ASU to facilitate international payments.
  • Check or Money Order: Please make the check or money order payable to the order of Arizona State University and include your student ID number on the memo line.
  • Federal Perkins Loan Repayment: Monthly payments depend on your loan amount and length of your repayment period. Payments can be made online. For complete details on repaying your Federal Perkins Loan, visit tuition.asu.edu/perkins-loan-repayment. Please note that effective September 30, 2017, new Perkins loans are no longer available as this program was discontinued.

ASU Payment Plan

If you are unable to pay your charges by the Tuition & Fee Payment Deadline, you may enroll in the ASU Payment Plan. The ASU payment plan offers you the option to budget your payment of certain university charges over several months within the semester. Eligible charges include tuition, housing, food plans, parking permits, and health insurance. If you have outstanding charges of $500 or more after the payment deadline, you’ll be automatically enrolled in the ASU Payment Plan and be billed an ASU Payment Plan fee. If you wish to withdraw from your classes and avoid being enrolled in the ASU Payment Plan, you must do so before the semester or session starts. ASU does not withdraw students for nonpayment. If you want to enroll in the ASU Payment Plan, log in to My ASU and select the Finances tab. Then click “ASU Payment Plan” in the Financial Success box. Make sure your balance is paid in full by the tuition due date, or is at least under $500 to avoid automatic enrollment in the ASU Payment Plan. Note that if you owe a balance of under $500, you will still be subject to a late fee.

FAFSA and Financial Aid

  • 2025-2026 FAFSA Filing Priority Date: Submit your FAFSA before ASU's priority filing date each year to increase your chances of receiving more federal aid. Students who apply by this date are more likely to get need-based aid. If you miss the priority date, you can still submit your FAFSA.
  • 2025-2026 Obama Scholars Program Deadline: To be considered for the Obama Scholars Program, you must submit your FAFSA by Feb. 1, 2025, and have a complete ASU admission application on file (including test scores, transcripts, and fees) by Jan. 15, 2025. This applies to both incoming first-year students and current Obama Scholars. Meeting the criteria and deadlines does not guarantee placement, as funding is limited and the program closes once funds are exhausted.
  • 2025-2026 ASU College Attainment Grant Program Application Deadline: To be considered for the ASU College Attainment Grant Program, submit your FAFSA by this date. Meeting the criteria and deadlines does not guarantee placement, as funding is limited and the program closes once funds are exhausted.
  • Obama Scholars Housing Confirmation: Obama Scholars must confirm their 2025-2026 ASU housing plans by June 1 to finalize their assignment by Aug. 1. If not finalized by then, your budget will change to off-campus or at-home, and your scholarship will be reduced.
  • Obama Scholars Document Verification Deadline: To be considered for the Obama Scholars Program, students must submit all requested financial aid verification documents. This applies to both incoming first-year students and current participants. Meeting criteria and deadlines does not guarantee placement, as funding is limited and the program closes when funds are exhausted. There are no exceptions to these dates, so please submit documents early to address any issues.
  • 2025-2026 Scholarship Appeal Submission Deadline: If you had your scholarship revoked, you can submit an appeal if you experienced significant, extenuating circumstances beyond your control.
  • 2026-2027 FAFSA Available: The 2026-2027 FAFSA can be submitted starting today.
  • 2026-2027 FAFSA Filing Priority Date: Submit your FAFSA before ASU's priority date, Jan. 15, each year to increase your chances of receiving need-based aid. Even if this date has passed, you can still submit your FAFSA.
  • Last Day to Submit the 2025-2026 FAFSA: The federal government will not allow students and parents to submit the 2025-2026 FAFSA or make FAFSA corrections after this date.
  • College Attainment Grant Document Verification Deadline: First-year students must submit all requested documents for financial aid verification to be considered for the ASU College Attainment Grant Program. Meeting criteria and deadlines does not guarantee placement, as funding is limited and the program closes when funds are exhausted. • ASU Scholarship Universe Application Deadlines: Most 2025-2026 deadlines fall between Jan. 1 and March 1. Review these as they vary. Scholarships are competitive, and if chosen, the awarding office will notify you. Typically, notifications are sent in April and May.

Important Considerations

  • Financial Aid Tracker: Regularly check your status in the Financial Aid Tracker on My ASU for updates on your financial aid disbursements.
  • FERPA: Your student account, billing, and personally identifiable information are protected by a federal regulation, FERPA, and ASU cannot disclose it without your consent. To add parent or guardian access to your billing and finances so they can complete tasks related to your financial aid, complete the guest add form.
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP): Maintain satisfactory academic progress to remain eligible for financial aid. If you violate SAP, submit your Satisfactory Academic Progress Review form before the deadline.
  • Federal Direct Loans: (Arizona time) won't be disbursed in the fall semester. If you're enrolled at least half-time in the spring semester and haven't used all your annual loan eligibility, you may get Federal Direct Loans in the spring. The same rule applies for spring and summer semesters.
