Navigating the Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide

Accessing the Student Portal

For students requiring accommodations at other institutions, such as the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK), accessing the student portal is a crucial first step each semester to gain full access. While specific URLs and login procedures may vary between institutions, the general principles remain consistent.

Initial Login and Semester Access

At UTK, the process begins by navigating to sds.utk.edu and clicking on the Student Portal link. You must do this at the beginning of each semester to gain full access to the student portal. Click Continue to Next Step.

Managing Accommodations

Once logged in, students can manage their accommodations, a critical aspect of ensuring a supportive learning environment.

Requesting and Updating Accommodations

A list of classes with accommodations already requested will be shown on your main dashboard. In the Accommodations box, click to add or remove accommodations you’re your request, then click Update Request.

Notetaking Services

After confirming the notetaking services request, SDS will work to hire a peer notetaker in the course. Once a notetaker has been assigned, please allow at least 48 hours after the course has ended for notes to appear. Once you have selected the List All Notes link, a drop-down box will appear that lists the date in which the notes were taken.

Scheduling Exams

NOTE: You will not be able to select a course for scheduling until the instructor has completed an Accessible Testing Agreement (ATA) in their Portal. Within the module, instructors must complete the Alternative Testing Agreement (ATA) for each course to provide ARC staff with instructions for administering exams. Faculty can access the ATA in the AIM Instructor Portal. After carefully reviewing the Schedule Exam Policy , scroll down and locate the Exam Request section.

Alternative Testing Agreement (ATA)

The Alternative Testing Agreement (ATA) is a critical component for students requiring accommodated testing. It is essential to understand how this agreement works and how it impacts the scheduling process. Students not approved to test at an ARC location must coordinate directly with their instructors to arrange accommodated testing at the UTD Testing Center or another distraction-reduced location. Note: The UTD Testing Center operates independently of theARC. Approval Grace Period (Optional): If the exam window spans multiple days, specify how many business days before or after the exam date students are allowed to test. Example: For an exam window of Aug. 6-8, you can set Aug. Time (Optional): Select your preferred start time. Exam Date Instructions: If the exam is online and requires a password enter it here. You can return to this section later to update the password if needed. Upload Exam Files (Optional): Please upload any materials that need to be printed at least two business days before the exam. Important: After copying an ATA to another course, any changes made to one agreement (such as adding exam dates or uploading files) will not sync across course sections.

Locate the Accessible Course Materials Preference section and use the dropdown menu to update your format preference, if needed. The preference selected should match the accommodations for which you are approved (e.g.

Communication Access

For students requiring communication access services, such as interpreting or transcribing, the student portal provides tools to manage these accommodations.

Requesting and Managing Communication Services

After logging into the Student Portal, click on the Communication Access link under the Accommodations menu on the left and then ensure you are in the correct semester. First step is to send your course access letter and select interpreting and/or transcribing. and let us know. o If an agency other than UTK is transcribing your class, they may also upload them to a different folder they provide you access to.

Financial Matters

The student portal may also include features related to financial matters, such as submitting receipts for reimbursement or managing payment options.
