From earning high seeds to hosting regional and super regional rounds, the Tigers have made their mark on the national stage. This article explores Auburn's NCAA Tournament history, highlighting key moments, players, and milestones.
Early Years and Coaching Changes
Following the 2000 season, Hal Baird retired as head coach. On September 1, 1999, Steve Renfroe was named head baseball coach at Auburn University, as the successor to Hal Baird following the 2000 season. On June 7, 2004, Renfroe was relieved of his duties as head baseball coach at Auburn. On June 29, 2004, Tom Slater was named as Steve Renfroe's replacement. After only having 2 coaches in 38 years, Auburn was now on the second coach within a five-year period. Slater was previously an assistant at Auburn during the 1990s before taking a head coaching job at his alma mater Virginia Military Institute following the 2000 season. On June 20, 2008, John Pawlowski was introduced as the 16th Head Coach of the Auburn Tigers baseball program. Pawlowski was previously the head coach at the College of Charleston. He took over that program in 2000, and posted a 338-192-1 record during his tenure. Under his direction, the Cougars made three straight NCAA post-season appearances, including their first ever appearance in 2004. On May 27, 2013, John Pawlowski was fired after finishing the 2013 season with a 33-23 record overall and a 13-17 record in the SEC. The Tigers failed to reach the NCAA tournament for three straight years. Pawlowski compiled a 167-126 overall record and a 71-79 SEC mark at Auburn.
Plainsman Park: Home Field Advantage
Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park is a baseball stadium located in Auburn, Alabama. It is the home field for the Auburn Tigers baseball team. The field was named in 1997 to honor two former Auburn players, Billy and Jimmy Hitchcock. The Hitchcock brothers were popular athletes in the 1930s. Jimmy was Auburn's first All-American in football and baseball, and later coached the Tigers during the 1940s. Billy helped Auburn make its first bowl appearance in football, as well as, helping the Tigers claim their first SEC baseball title in 1937. In 2003, the stadium was renamed Samford Stadium-Hitchcock Field at Plainsman Park after W. James "Jimmy" Samford passed. Auburn’s Plainsman Park received a $30M renovation over two years, upgrading facilities for players and fans.

2025 Season: A Top-Four Seed
For just the second time in program history, Auburn baseball was named a top-four seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers were named the No. 4 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, landing their third regional bid in four seasons. It's their first national seed in 22 seasons, last being seeded so highly in 2003. This year's seeding matches the highest in the program's history.
Auburn’s regional field will include 2-seed North Carolina State, 3-seed Stetson and 4-seed Central Connecticut State. This latest hosting bid comes after Auburn's best regular season in the Butch Thompson era. With a record of 38-18, the Tigers secured more regular-season victories than they ever had in Thompson's 10-season tenure. That also included a résumé with a top-three RPI and the nation's strongest schedule.

Hosting a Super Regional
After a full weekend of baseball on the Plains, the Auburn Tigers were crowned the victors of their NCAA regional final after beating Central Connecticut on Friday, Stetson on Saturday and NC State in the championship game on Sunday. The Tigers dominated the Wolfpack in the Sunday evening championship game. Things played out pretty evenly through the first three innings, but Auburn blew the game open in the fourth inning, putting 7 runs on the board. They kept it going in the fifth inning, adding three more runs before going scoreless until an Ike Irish solo homerun in the eighth inning. Freshman pitcher Andreas Alvarez allowed only six hits in his five innings and recorded five strikeouts. Cade Fisher finished the game for the Tigers, who ultimately only allowed one run from NC State. After winning the regional, the Tigers will host an NCAA super regional at Plainsman Park for the first time in program history. They will face Coastal Carolina in the first game of the super regional.
2022: Conquering the West Coast
Auburn baseball got the full West Coast treatment in 2022. The Tigers prevailed, however, winning the Corvallis Super Regional, 2-1, to advance to the College World Series. In the series-clinching win in game three, Auburn slugger Sonny DiChiara hit a two-run home run to put the Tigers on the board, and the combination of Mason Barnett, Carson Skipper, and Blake Burkhalter combined to strike out 14 Beavers to nail down the win.
2019: Julien's Super Regional Performance
Auburn took two of three games from North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2019 by combining to score 25 runs in its two victories. Julien recorded five hits and six RBI over the weekend, while Ryan Bliss, Conor Davis, and Rankin Woley had strong outings at the plate over the weekend.
2018: Heartbreak in Gainesville
Auburn baseball breezed through the Raleigh Regional to advance to its first Super Regional in 19 years, meeting up with SEC rival Florida in Gainesville. Florida got the best of Auburn in game one in a battle of current MLB pitchers, Brady Singer and Casey Mize. Singer struck out nine batters and allowed two runs on four hits to help Florida secure the 8-2 victory over the Tigers. Auburn responded by winning game two, 3-2, thanks to a Luke Jarvis home run in the top of the 9th inning.
Game three between the Tigers and Gators was a classic that ended in a heartbreaking way for Auburn. Tied 2-2 in the 11th inning, Florida's Austin Langworthy hit a ball to deep right field. Auburn right fielder Steven Williams jumped to catch the ball, but it bounced out of his glove and landed beyond the short porch, giving the Gators the close win.

Coach Thompson's Perspective
“It’s pretty gratifying, standing here for this," Thompson said Monday. "But the challenges will start again here on Friday. There’s no doubt there’s been a good level of perseverance over a year’s time to get us to this point. It’s not easy, and it’s not supposed to be. You can take this reward for 15 minutes or so, before we start clicking back into practice this afternoon and getting ready for what we know is going to be a tough, tough challenge."
“It’s an extremely short list of teams that have hosted three of the last four regionals, and we’re honored to be a part of it,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “To do it for the first time in our program’s history, I’m thankful to be associated with such an amazing group of players, coaches, stakeholders, fans and administration that sees the amazing value and potential in Auburn baseball.
“Thankful for being able to get through this tough regional,” Thompson said after Auburn's 11-1 win over NC State on Sunday. “That was a grind for us. Never hosted a super regional before. Pretty excited about that. They fought hard, they were connected. They played a pretty solid three days for us.”
"I think we had a poor matchup to be honest because of the two relievers that we were committed to throw tonight were right-handed with good fastballs and these guys eat these great fastballs for breakfast," Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said.

"I'm extremely happy for our program because when you have a vision of seeing this over and over in your head, I thought it would be more and more exciting," Thompson said.
"Every time that we faced them, whether we had adversity or whether we rose to the challenge and had success, I just kept telling them to bank it. That this is going to make a difference. We saw some good arms this weekend. We saw some lower slot stuff that gave us problems. We saw one of the best closers in college baseball yesterday. We've seen it. All the preparation has been good, playing in our league, seeing really good arms, and did it again this weekend and had success."
Player Perspectives
"It's an unbelievable feeling. I'm still full of emotion right now. I knew what it was going to take to win this game tonight. It was going to take a battle until the last pitch of the game, the very last pitch of the game," Auburn first baseman Josh Anthony said. Anthony, who came in to Sunday's game 5 of 8 with four runs scored and two RBIs including a solo home run against Army, continued his torrid pace with the bat by finishing the Sunday finale 4 of 5 with five RBIs.
"These guys, the whole lineup was just unbelievable the whole weekend," Auburn senior Luke Jarvis said. "It did just show when everybody is locked in, all nine guys, what we're capable of.
Alvarez on his pitching performance, per Auburn Rivals:“I had the slider working really well tonight and then the fastball. I was able to throw that for a lot of strikes and attack with that. So having the slider and the fastball to work off each other was really what helped tonight.”
Ike Irish on moving on to the super regional, per Auburn Rivals:"It's unbelievable, not just for me, but for our coaching staff. They put so much time and effort into us, and this is a pretty rewarding feeling. I think it's huge for guys, like Cooper McMurray, Parker Carlson and Ben Schorr, who've been in the program so long, who've seen the ups and downs.
