Availability of Financial Aid

In Avenues New York, financial aid is typically available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. While most financial aid is allocated to students in grades kindergarten through 12, limited financial aid may be available for Small World, nursery, and pre-K programs. Families applying to these younger age groups are encouraged to contact the school to discuss their situation. Avenues São Paulo offers partial financial assistance and full scholarship to the parents of admitted students in kindergarten through 11th grade.

How Financial Need is Assessed

Avenues believes the primary responsibility for tuition rests with the family, and each family is expected to look to its own resources before requesting assistance. Financial assistance is not awarded as a merit-based scholarship; awards are based solely on the family’s financial profile. Avenues attempts to recognize the distinctiveness of each situation and, when there is demonstrated need, to tailor grants to meet the needs of each qualified family.

Clarity, a third-party service, analyzes a family's ability to pay by considering income, assets (including home and investments), debts (such as mortgage and loans), family size, and the number of family members enrolled in tuition-charging schools or colleges. After allowances for basic necessities, taxes, and certain other expenses, Clarity estimates the portion of remaining funds available for school costs and provides this analysis to Avenues as a recommendation. The final award determination comes from Avenues based on school policies, practices, and available budget, not Clarity.

Many factors are taken into account, including, but not limited to, the number of children in a family and how many of them attend tuition-based schools; additional dependents; all sources of income, assets and liabilities; expenses such as mortgage or rent, automobiles, camps and lessons and unreimbursed medical expenses. Since each family’s situation is evaluated individually, there is no specific income cutoff.

Financial Aid Application Process

To apply for financial assistance, families must indicate their intention at the time of submission of the admissions application. The following documents are typically required for the financial assistance application:

  • Full income tax for the current calendar year and the last calendar year
  • Last three months of pay stubs
  • Last three months of bank statements from all existing bank accounts

Self-employed parents must submit business tax returns, and Avenues reserves the right to request full business filings semi-annually. Avenues also reserves the right to verify financial information with SERASA.

Financial Aid Funding Priorities

When the need for aid exceeds Avenues’ resources, the financial aid committee prioritizes awarding funds each year to returning students with aid packages already in place, new students in need of aid, and, lastly, to current students who are new to financial aid. Avenues reserves the right for financial aid grants to reflect the enrollment priorities of the school (e.g. gender balance, class size, socioeconomic diversity).

Important Considerations for Applicants

  • Application Deadlines: Submitting an application by the deadline is critical, as most funding is allocated soon after the deadline. Late applications for returning families will not be considered for any increase in financial aid.
  • Confidentiality: Avenues ensures confidentiality throughout the financial aid process. All financial data and subsequent proceedings with Avenues are strictly confidential; only members of the financial aid committee have access to a family’s information.
  • Divorced or Separated Parents: Avenues believes that both parents are responsible for the education of a child and will consider the income and assets of both natural parents, even if only one parent is in favor of a student’s attendance at Avenues.
  • Employment of Parents: The financial aid committee may impute a salary for a non-working parent when there are no preschool-age children or others to care for in the home, and/or no medical or disability issues that prevent the parent from seeking employment.
  • Student Assets: All student assets are to be included in the application and will be considered.
  • Appeals: Families may request reconsideration by the financial aid committee upon receipt of a financial aid decision if there is new information available for consideration that wasn’t previously known.

Additional Financial Aid Information

  • Financial Aid Extensions: Financial aid packages may extend beyond tuition so that all students can fully enjoy the breadth of the program. The level of funding correlates with the same percentage of tuition aid a family received.
  • Renewal of Grants: Avenues renews grants based on a family’s demonstrated financial need. Families must reapply for assistance each year by submitting current forms and supporting documents.
  • Loans: Avenues does not provide tuition loans.
  • Sibling Discount: Avenues does not offer a sibling discount, but families with multiple children are encouraged to apply for financial aid.

Financial Aid for International Families

International students are eligible to apply for financial aid. Additional documentation may be required by the financial aid committee to verify a family’s ability to contribute toward the cost of education.
