Belk College of Business: A Comprehensive Overview

The University of North Carolina-Charlotte’s Belk College of Business is located just outside North Carolina’s largest city. Charlotte is the 16th largest city in the country and the second-largest financial services center. The Belk College of Business has been driving business in the Charlotte region for over 50 years. As North Carolina's premier urban research business school and one of fewer than two percent of the world's business schools to achieve and maintain AACSB International accreditation for both business and accounting programs, the Belk College offers outstanding business education at the undergraduate and graduate levels, along with executive education. UNC Charlotte was the first university in the Charlotte region to earn accreditation by AACSB International, and has now held that distinction for more than 30 years.

Academics and Programs

The Belk College offers nine majors and concentrations and a large number of concentrations and minors. Students at Belk may choose from nine different majors, with the most recently established ones being a business analytics major and a finance major in real estate. Each area of study provides students with exceptional preparation for a career in commercial banking, financial technology, real estate, risk management and insurance, as well as many other areas of business.

All business degrees at the UNC Charlotte Belk College of Business are composed of: (1) General Education Requirements, (2) Progression Requirements, (3) Core Requirements, (4) Major Requirements, and (5) Electives. Electives are needed to complete 120 hours. This major is designed to primarily serve transfer students and former UNC Charlotte students returning to complete their degree. Junior standing (60 credit hours or more); Pre-Business Requirements listed below; approved Change of Major form. A minimum grade of C is required for all Progression Courses. Once enrolled at UNC Charlotte, students may attempt each of the Progression Courses listed above a maximum of two times. An attempt is defined as a course that is completed with a final grade of A, B, C, D, or F.

The college was the No. Dean Jennifer Troyer was appointed interim provost, and later was named to the permanent role. BUSN 2100: Business Professional Development is a 1-credit course designed to help students strengthen their academic, professional and personal success skills within the Belk College of Business.
Students earning a grade of C or higher on the INFO 2130 cumulative exam administered on this date will earn (3) three hours of academic credit for INFO 2130, a course required for all business majors.

Niblock Student Center

From the beginning of your undergraduate career until graduation, the Niblock Student Center is designed to help you achieve academic and professional success. “The Niblock Student Center in the Belk College of Business helps students identify and plan for their career goals, cultivate career-ready skills and network with business employers through individual coaching, professional development workshops, and experiential education,” school officials said in the school survey submittted to Poets&Quants for Undergrads. Niblock Student Center staff partner with the University Career Center to serve business students.

J. Murrey Atkins Library offers over 3.8 million volumes, including 1.2 million e-books, over 650 databases, and approximately 222,000 journals, the vast majority available electronically.

For last year’s graduating class, 67% had internships before graduation. Out of those seeking employment for the Class of 2019, some 76.89% had full-time employment within three months of graduation. Those with employment reported an average salary of $49,069. About a quarter (23.49%) of the class reported earning an average signing bonus of $1,825. Financial services firms and banks were some of the most popular landing areas for Belk College graduates immediately after graduation. Bank of America hired the most 2019 graduates with 32 electing to work for the bank. Wells Fargo followed in popularity this year with 14 graduates going to work there.

History and Accreditation

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has offered undergraduate programs in business administration since the 1960s. UNC Charlotte creates the College of Business Administration with the departments of Accounting, Business Administration and Economics. Allan V. Palmer is appointed dean. Richard Neel is appointed dean, replacing Allan V. Palmer. The first business advisory council is established with Thomas M. Edward Mazze, who previously served as dean of the school of business at Temple University, is appointed Belk College dean. To accommodate growth at the College, a third floor is constructed to the Friday Building along with distinctive columns. Claude Lilly becomes dean at the College celebrates its 30th anniversary. The Belk College launches its first doctoral program, Ph.D. Joseph Mazzola, a professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, is appointed dean. Mazzola will serve until 2011. Steven Ott, who first joined the Belk College in 1999 as the John Crosland Sr. Distinguished Professor of Real Estate and Development, is appointed dean. The UNC Charlotte Center City, the only UNC System classroom building conceived and designed specifically to serve the business, organizations and people of an urban center, opens. The Belk family continues its support of the college by donating $5 million, the largest gift in college’s history. Professor Emeritus Thomas C. Turner, who helped establish the Department of Accounting, donates $2.5 million to UNC Charlotte. First cohort for the M.S.
