The locker rooms were modernized, and the coaches' office complex was overhauled, featuring conference space, offices, a film room, and a state-of-the-art weight training facility.

Building a Holistic Program

Berry's vision extended beyond football fundamentals and plays. He prioritized academics, as demonstrated by the creation of the "Smart Cats" program, which recognizes players who achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher each semester. Outside the classroom, Berry and his staff emphasize faith and character development. During training camp, players attend church together every Sunday, and gospel music fills the weight room during morning workouts. Berry encourages his players to deepen their spiritual grounding and foster a sense of family within the team.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the program's success, Berry and his staff have faced numerous challenges. These include the tragic loss of a player in a car accident, issues with housing for coaches and players, outdated HVAC units, broken ice machines, and limited access to medical supplies. The college also lacks a nutritionist on staff, requiring Berry and his coaches to creatively manage the team's nutrition and hydration needs. To address the needs of players living off campus without meal plans, Berry collaborated with the administration, the campus food service provider, and community supporters to ensure their needs were met.

The Perfect Season

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Benedict College Tiger football team concluded its season with a perfect 10-0 record. The 2022 season marked a historic milestone for Benedict College football. The team achieved its first undefeated season and earned a national ranking of #8 among Division II programs. The Tigers' journey culminated in winning the SIAC Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time.
