Bethany Global University: Equipping Leaders for Global Transformation

Bethany Global University (BGU), formerly Bethany College of Missions, stands as a private Evangelical Christian university located in Bloomington, Minnesota. Rooted in a rich history of mission work and theological education, BGU is dedicated to training individuals for impactful engagement in global missions and ministry. With a focus on evangelism, church planting, leadership development, and missions training, the university equips and sends intercultural disciple-makers to bring Kingdom transformation in the nations.

A Legacy of Faith and Vision

Bethany's story began in 1945 with five families who shared a profound commitment to Christian missionary work and a desire to spread the Gospel. These families, united in their purpose, sold their possessions and combined their resources to establish the Bethany Fellowship Missionary Training Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The institution emerged from the Bethany Fellowship, which was founded by five families in 1945. Ted Hegre, who served as their pastor, shared with this small fellowship the vision of sending and supporting 100 missionaries. The name "Bethany" was chosen because it was a place Jesus would retreat with his disciples for rest, prayer and reflection.

As Bethany Fellowship expanded, they outgrew "Bethany House" where they all lived. Bethany Global University began with 10 students in October 1948.

A Multifaceted Ministry

Bethany consists of an accredited University (Bethany Global University) and a mission-sending and partnering agency (Bethany International). Bethany is equipping and sending intercultural disciple-makers to bring Kingdom transformation in the nations. Bethany's primary source of funding through the years, along with school fees, mission support partners, and people giving as moved by God, has been through business ventures that produced wood toys, lefse and pancake griddles, camping trailers, and book publishing and printing. These ventures funded the community, the college of missions, and supported missionaries. Bethany Press International, founded in 1997 as a separate ministry to print books for Christian authors and publishers, originally printed books for Bethany House Publishers (begun in 1956 and sold in 2003 to Baker Book House).
