Mookie Betts: A Champion On and Off the Field

Mookie Betts, the Los Angeles Dodgers' shortstop, is renowned for his exceptional baseball skills, including winning the 2018 American League MVP and participating in four World Series, securing three victories. However, his contributions extend far beyond the baseball diamond. Betts' dedication to humanitarian work has earned him the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, solidifying his legacy as a true champion both on and off the field.

The Roberto Clemente Award

The Roberto Clemente Award is an annual honor bestowed upon a Major League player who embodies the spirit of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy, and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Betts received the award before Game 3 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium. He stands among esteemed company, joining Steve Garvey (1981), Clayton Kershaw (2012), and Justin Turner (2022) as the fourth member of the Dodgers to receive this prestigious recognition. The honor, in Betts' own words, is the most gratifying of his career.

The 5050 Foundation: Breaking Barriers for Underserved Youth

In 2021, Mookie Betts and his wife, Brianna, established the 5050 Foundation, driven by a clear mission: to break barriers that hinder children from reaching their full potential, particularly those facing medical and financial challenges. The foundation's work is structured around four core pillars: mental/emotional health, nutrition, financial literacy, and physical fitness.

Mental and Emotional Health Initiatives

Recognizing the importance of mental well-being, the 5050 Foundation actively supports programs that provide mental and emotional health resources to underserved youth. Betts understands the significance of a positive mindset, emphasizing that opportunities can be missed if one is not in the right mental headspace, urging others to "stay in the right head space, man, and that’s one of just being calm and being aware of what’s going on."

Addressing Hunger and Homelessness

Betts, in partnership with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, contributed $160,000 to the Brother Crusade, supporting hunger and homelessness initiatives. In 2023, alongside LADF and the Brotherhood Crusade, Betts handed out Thanksgiving meals to 1,500 families at Algin Sutton Recreational Center in South L.A. The rec center hosted the LADF’s third annual turkey giveaway as volunteers handed out meals, toys, and other supplies via drive-thru. Furthermore, the "50 Feeds LA" initiative, launched in 2021, saw Betts partnering with the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) to feed Angelenos in South LA, contributing more than $300,000 and feeding thousands over the past three holiday seasons.

Financial Literacy Programs

The 5050 Foundation recognizes the importance of financial literacy in empowering young people. In January, the foundation hosted a financial literacy workshop at Dodger Stadium for three local high schools, where students learned important financial literacy tools from seasoned Bank of America professionals.

Promoting Physical Fitness

The foundation actively promotes physical fitness among youth. Betts founded an AAU basketball program and an eponymous baseball tournament in his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. He also created "Team Mookie" in Nashville, an elite boys’ basketball and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team. The 16U squad clinched the EYBL Championship League Title in 2024. He now has helped to fund six AAU teams in the Nashville region.

Supporting Disaster Relief

In times of crisis, Betts and his foundation have stepped up to provide support. He donated over $30,000 in Nike apparel to victims of the deadly Los Angeles fires. Furthermore, he and his foundation assisted a family whose Altadena home was destroyed in the Eaton Fire with financial assistance and recovery resources.

Partnering with the Los Angeles Unified School District

During the 2024-25 school year, Betts and the 5050 Foundation partnered with the Los Angeles Unified School District to launch an academic challenge focused on students in high school athletics. Students competed for best overall grade-point average (team and individual), and most improved GPA (team and individual).

Supporting UCLA Children’s Hospital

Betts and the 5050 Foundation have paid visits to UCLA Children’s Hospital, where they created the “Betts on Us Fund,” the purpose of which is to help families of pediatric patients in need of financial assistance gain access to adequate health care support. In addition to the hospital partnership, Betts partnered with Crete Academy in South Los Angeles to help bring more than 700 underserved youth and their families to a Dodger game.

Community Engagement and Recognition

Mookie Betts' commitment to community extends to his active participation in Los Angeles Dodgers community programming, where he has mentored and visited with Make-A-Wish program participants, UCLA health patients, local students and student athletes, and been a staple of the Dodgers annual “Dodgers Love LA Community Tour”. Betts also participates in the Dodgers’ annual Juneteenth activations and supported the teams’ efforts to grow their African American fan base through his engagement in the annual Black Heritage Night programming as well as Jackie Robinson Day activations in support of MLB Initiatives.

His consistent efforts have earned him nominations for the Roberto Clemente Award. The Dodgers nominated their superstar, Mookie Betts, for the annual Roberto Clemente Award. This marked his second consecutive nomination.
