Beyond Rising: Empowering Undocumented Youth Through Internships in New York City
The Oyate Group's Beyond Rising Internship program stands as a beacon of opportunity for undocumented students aged 16-20 in New York City. Launched in 2022, this initiative provides skill training and career mentorship to a historically marginalized group, focusing on workforce development, financial empowerment, and access to higher education for undocumented youth.
Program Overview
Building on the success of the inaugural Summer 2022 Program, the Beyond Rising Internship has proven effective in empowering participants, known as Beyond Rising Fellows, with essential skills, confidence, and professional networks.
The Beyond Rising Internship aims to provide skill training and career mentorship to a historically marginalized group. To be considered, candidates respond to a set of questions on the electronic application. If their application is deemed eligible, they will proceed to the second round, which involves a video-conference interview. Participants commit to weekly workloads, maintain attendance, adhere to workplace regulations, and meet deadlines.
A Multifaceted Approach to Youth Development
Oyate Group engages young people in our communities to create safe, fun, purpose-driven programs where they can explore their interests and begin building their futures.
Our youth programs engage more than 4,300 children and young adults every year and are always free of charge. Our after-school programs partner with schools to ensure learning continues in the afternoon hours, giving working parents peace of mind. Homework helps keep kids on task. Sports and the arts help young people learn how to lead and value their own perspectives. Creative cultural activities inspire community activism while awakening lifelong talents. We integrate mentorships, internships, and college access support so young people can envision their own paths forward, whether that means continuing with their education or a chosen vocation. At East Side Community School, our Beacon offers a wide range of focused after-school activities, plus summer camp.

Placement Opportunities and Support Systems
Beyond Rising places participating high schoolers in administrative offices at local colleges and universities and offers them additional enrichment activities at Oyate Group’s offices including art projects, mentoring, skills training, resume prep, college visits and field trips and more. Participants receive a stipend from Oyate Group for the entirety of the program.
Oyate staff provide on-site coaching, and participants engage in enrichment activities, including journaling and therapeutic art.
Expanding Opportunities for Undocumented Students
Beyond Rising is a paid internship program for undocumented youth in New York City run by Oyate Group.
Interns are connected to local colleges, businesses, and nonprofits. A virtual tutoring fellowship during fall 2025 semester. All majors welcome. A 10-month civic and social justice leadership development program for Latinas aged 18-35 years old. Must live in one of the following states: AZ, CA, FL, GA, IL, MN, NV, NC, PA, TX, VA, WA, WI, and Washington DC.
