Blue Mountain Christian University (BMCU), formerly known as Blue Mountain College, stands as a beacon of Christian higher education in Blue Mountain, Mississippi. With a rich history spanning over 150 years, BMCU has evolved from a women's institute to a co-educational university, always emphasizing a blend of faith, academics, and personal growth.
Historical Overview
Founding and Early Years
Blue Mountain Christian University was established in 1873 as Blue Mountain Female Institute by Brigadier General Mark Perrin Lowrey. Lowrey, a man of vision and a village preacher, recognized the importance of educating women, believing it would contribute to the South's recovery after the Civil War. The institute began with 50 students and a faculty comprised of Lowrey and his two daughters, Modena and Margaret. In 1877, the institution received its official charter from the State of Mississippi.
Modena Lowrey Berry, affectionately known as "Mother Berry," played a crucial role in the college's development, serving as "Lady Principal" and then as vice president from 1873 to 1934. Her tenure is perhaps unmatched by any woman in a major college official position. She was the second woman in Mississippi's history to be named to the Mississippi Hall of Fame.
The Lowrey Legacy
For nearly a century, leadership of the institution remained within the Lowrey family. From 1873 to 1960, M.P. Lowrey's sons, Dr. W. T. Lowrey and Dr. B. G. Lowrey, and his grandson, Dr. Lawrence T. Lowrey, all served as presidents of the College.
Transition and Growth
In 1960, Dr. Wilfred C. Tyler, a long-time professor of Bible at the school, assumed the presidency after the sudden death of President Lowrey. He was followed by Dr. E. Harold Fisher in 1965, who served until his retirement in 2001. Dr. Bettye Rogers Coward then served as president from 2001 to 2012. In August 2012, Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin became the eighth president of Blue Mountain College.

Originally an independently owned institution, the Lowrey family turned control of the college over to the Mississippi Baptist Convention in 1920.
Becoming Co-Educational and University Status
From its founding until 2005, Blue Mountain College operated as a traditional liberal arts college for women. However, in 1956, a program was introduced to train men for church-related vocations. On October 4, 2005, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to make all programs available to male students, thus making BMC fully co-educational. In 2022, the institution's name was officially changed to Blue Mountain Christian University.

A minor in History requires 18 semester hours of coursework.

BMCU offers an accelerated nursing track, allowing individuals with a bachelor's degree to earn their BSN in just three semesters. The university also broke ground on the Center for Grace & Healing, the future home of the School of Nursing and Department of Natural Sciences. The White Coat Ceremony marks the beginning of clinical training for nursing students, signifying their pledge to serve with compassion and integrity.
