General Admission Requirements

SAT or ACT: Boston University requires either the SAT or the ACT test. Half the applicants admitted to Boston University who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1420 and 1530 or an ACT score of 32 and 34. However, one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one quarter scored below these ranges.

These tests can take up to 6 weeks to be reported from ETS to our institution; students should plan accordingly. TOEFL scores should be reported directly from ETS to our institution code: 3087 (no department code). IELTS official score reports should be sent directly from the testing center to the College of Engineering.

TOEFL and IELTS tests are valid for 2 years. For example, a student applying for Fall 2026 must have taken the test after January 1, 2024.

TOEFL Waiver: Applicants will not need to request a TOEFL waiver if the student has studied in the United States (or one of the above countries) at an accredited college or university for at least TWO (2) years. This waiver does not apply to students who have earned or are earning undergraduate or graduate degrees from an institution outside the United States while enrolled in a “dual degree” program with an institution in the United States.

2. Transcripts and Academic Records

International students must submit official transcripts from all secondary schools and universities attended. If your transcript or academic records are in a foreign language, you will need to provide a certified English translation of each document. If your transcript is in English, a professional translation or a course-by-course credential evaluation is not required.

3. Visa and Immigration Documents

International students must obtain the appropriate visa and immigration documents to study in the United States. Metropolitan College sponsors visas for graduate students in master’s degree and select graduate certificate programs for full-time on-campus study. If you are planning to study at Boston University’s Metropolitan College (MET) on an F-1 visa, you will need to maintain full-time status (at least 12 units).

4. Financial Documentation

All international students who are admitted to Boston University are required to submit additional documents prior to enrolling at BU. International students will be notified by the Graduate Programs Office of the financial documentation necessary to be issued an I-20.

Students who are not offered merit-based scholarships are required to provide proof of financial support to cover the cost of their first year at Boston University. This amount will be listed in the letter from the Graduate Programs Office. There are various manners in which students can provide financial documentation to prove support for their first year of study.

Required Financial Documents:

An official bank statement or credit reference from a bank stating the availability of the minimum estimated expenses.
The name on this document needs to match the name on the signed Financial Sponsorship Certification.
Exactly what expenses will be covered. For example: academic fees, living expenses (how much), health insurance, financial support for family members, travel costs, etc.
Submit an official letter of certification from the lending institution.
All international students must supply a photocopy of the photo/data page of their current, valid passport. This can be uploaded via the Common Application, uploaded to the MyBU Applicant Portal under the “Application Status” page, or faxed to 617-353-5334.

Financial Support for Dependents:

Dependents are those family members who will accompany you to the United States. International students who have dependents coming to the United States with them will be required to submit additional financial documentation to prove financial support for their dependents.

Students Funding Their Own Education:

Students funding their own education will be required to provide official bank statements to cover their educational and living expenses for their first year of study. Financial Documents must be issued in the student’s name.

Students with Full Financial Aid Packages:

Students who are offered a full financial aid package will not be required to submit any additional financial documentation (unless traveling with dependents). This includes all of our PhD students. All PhD funding sources require work authorization. As a consequence, matriculation into the PhD program requires evidence of work authorization.
