Brian Amani Branch, born on October 22, 2001, is an American professional football safety currently playing for the Detroit Lions in the National Football League (NFL). His journey to the NFL was paved with a successful college career at the University of Alabama, where he earned All-American honors and a national championship.
Early Life and College Career
Before entering the NFL, Branch honed his skills playing college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He played three seasons (2020-2022) at Alabama, during which he recorded a combined total of 172 tackles (111 solo), 23 pass defenses, 19.5 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, three interceptions, and one fumble recovery.
In 2020, Branch appeared in 12 games, starting in three of them. He recorded 27 tackles, including half a stop for loss, along with seven pass breakups and two interceptions. His seven pass breakups were tied for third in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) among freshmen defenders.

Leading up to the 2023 NFL Draft, Branch was highly regarded as a top safety prospect. Pro Football Focus (PFF) listed him as the top safety prospect and 15th overall on their big board. NFL draft analysts Bucky Brooks (NFL.com), Mel Kiper Jr. (ESPN), and Dane Brugler (The Athletic) unanimously considered him the No. 1 safety prospect in the draft.

2023 Season: Rookie Impact
During training camp, Branch competed for a role as the primary backup safety and starting nickelback. Head coach Dan Campbell named Branch the starting nickelback to begin the regular season, also listing him as a backup free safety.
Branch made his professional regular season debut on September 7, 2023, recording three combined tackles (two solo), a pass deflection, and a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs. Branch started in the Detroit Lions' home-opener against the Los Angeles Rams, making seven combined tackles (five solo) and a season-high three pass deflections. He was sidelined during the Lions' Week 4 win against the Seattle Seahawks due to a knee injury.
On December 13, 2024, Branch recorded six combined tackles (five solo), two pass deflections, and intercepted two passes thrown by Dak Prescott during a 47-9 victory at the Dallas Cowboys. His performance in Week 8 earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week. In Week 15, he collected a season-high 14 combined tackles (eight solo) and deflected a pass in the Lions' 42-48 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

2025 Season: Controversies
During the 2025 season, following a Week 6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, Branch refused to shake hands with Patrick Mahomes. When JuJu Smith-Schuster approached him, Branch punched Smith-Schuster in the face, initiating a brief brawl between the two teams. Branch stated in a post-game interview that he was illegally blocked in the back without any penalty being called. Branch was suspended 1 game after melee with Chiefs.
