Ashford University
Ashford University, one of Bridgepoint's primary assets, offered a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. On December 22, 2015, an agreement was made that Clinton Catalyst, LLC would buy the Ashford University campus properties for $1.6 million, according to the Clinton Herald. For the subsequent 12 months, Ashford University planned to lease the campus from Clinton Catalyst to make sure that the spring semester classes could continue, according to the Clinton Herald's report. Since becoming an online-only university in 2016, Ashford University's GI Bill eligibility has been through numerous changes, challenges, and controversies.

Investigations and Lawsuits
Bridgepoint Education faced and settled several lawsuits, including state-level lawsuits and federal investigations. In November 2017, the California Attorney General brought a lawsuit against Ashford University and its parent company Bridgepoint for engaging in "unlawful marketing, sales and debt collection practices".
California Attorney General Lawsuit
In November 2021, the California Attorney General case filed in 2017 against Ashford University began its trial phase. California Judge Eddie C. Sturgeon found for the plaintiffs on March 3, 2022, his 49-page opinion citing evidence that Zovio deceived students about their ability to become teachers, nurses, social workers, drug and alcohol counselors using their degrees; and misled students about how much financial aid they would receive; misrepresented federal financial aid rules, understated costs of attendance, the time needed to complete degree requirements, their ability to transfer credits, and evidence of deception within the admissions department, and Zovio's tolerance for repeat compliance offenders. Zovio was fined $22,375,282.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Action
Bridgepoint Education was also subject to action by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) for deceiving students into taking out private student loans that cost more than advertised. The Bureau is ordering Bridgepoint to discharge all outstanding private loans the institution made to its students and to refund loan payments already made by borrowers. Loan forgiveness and refunds and will total over $23.5 million in automatic consumer relief. Bridgepoint must also pay an $8 million civil penalty to the Bureau. Bridgepoint must require all entering students, and current students who start different programs, to use a newly created financial aid disclosure tool when they borrow money to pay for school. Students will use the new tool to access personalized financial aid offer information as well as information about graduation and loan default rates, potential salaries for their programs, and post-graduation budgeting.
Department of Education Scrutiny
The Department of Education also scrutinized Bridgepoint Education's practices. Department of Education's Office of Inspector General (OIG) audit services division performed a compliance audit of Ashford University for the period March 10, 2005, through June 30, 2009. In November 2017, the California Attorney General brought a lawsuit against Ashford University and its parent company Bridgepoint for engaging in "unlawful marketing, sales and debt collection practices".
Rebranding to Zovio
In a strategic shift, Bridgepoint Education rebranded itself as Zovio in April 2019. Bridgepoint Education Rebrands as Zovio, an ‘Education Technology Services Company’. This move signaled a transition from primarily owning for-profit colleges to becoming an education technology services provider for universities.

Clinton, Iowa, fulfilled requirements for a traditional campus presence and supported some local students and administrative functions for Ashford University. The University of Arizona announced the completion of its acquisition of Ashford University, which would be transformed into The University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC). Zovio continued to provide services to Ashford University, which was acquired by The University of Arizona in late 2020 and became The University of Arizona Global Campus (UAGC).
Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and Liquidation
Zovio filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2022, and its assets related to UAGC were subsequently acquired by UAGC, effectively ending Zovio's operations. The Board of Directors officially closed the business on September 11, 2022. Following the liquidation, Zovio plans to sell Fullstack Academy for an amount estimated between $34 and $55 million, according to the mentioned filing to the SEC.
