Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program: Opening Doors to Higher Education

The Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program, a collaborative effort between The Sallie Mae Fund and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, aims to increase access and completion of higher education among students of color and those from underserved communities. This initiative addresses the obstacles that often stand in the way of minority students and those from marginalized backgrounds, providing them with the financial support necessary to pursue their educational aspirations.

A Commitment to Diversity and Equity

Recognizing the transformative power of higher education, Sallie Mae (Nasdaq: SLM) believes that education and life-long learning, in all forms, help people achieve great things. The Sallie Mae Fund, the charitable arm of Sallie Mae, is dedicated to removing barriers to college access, closing affordability gaps, and helping more students complete their higher education through mission-aligned philanthropic efforts. In 2021, The Sallie Mae Fund partnered with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund to expand the Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program in an effort to further promote diversity in higher education among minority students and others from historically underserved communities.

Scholarship Opportunities for High School Seniors

The Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program offers several avenues for financial assistance. One key component focuses on supporting high school seniors facing financial challenges. The program will award 75 $10,000 scholarships to high school seniors over three years. High school seniors who are facing financial challenges may apply to win a $10,000 scholarship to help them attend college or a vocational-technical school.

Scholarships for Graduate Students

The Sallie Mae Fund, in partnership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund, has launched The Bridging the Dream Scholarship Program for Graduate Students to help advance social justice and promote diversity and equity through higher education. Up to $100,000 in scholarships are available for prospective or current graduate students from underserved or marginalized communities, including minority, LGBTQ+, low-income, and first-generation college students.

Applicants for The Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students must demonstrate a commitment to leveraging their degree to advancing social justice. To be eligible, applicants must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident currently enrolled at least half-time at an accredited graduate level program.
