The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, funded by the Florida Lottery, offers Florida high school graduates the opportunity to be rewarded for their academic achievements with financial assistance for college. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the Bright Futures Scholarship, including eligibility requirements, award amounts, and the application process.

What is the Bright Futures Scholarship?

The Bright Futures Scholarship Program is a state-sponsored initiative designed to reward Florida high school graduates for their academic achievements. It is funded by the Florida Lottery and has provided scholarships to nearly one million students. The program offers various scholarships based on high school grades and test scores.

Types of Bright Futures Scholarships

There are two main types of Bright Futures awards:

  • Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) Award: This is the most competitive and generous Bright Futures scholarship. Florida Academic Scholars are eligible to receive an award amount equal to 100% of tuition and applicable fees at Florida State University.
  • Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) Award: This scholarship is less competitive than the FAS, but it still has relatively high minimum test score and GPA requirements. Florida Medallion Scholars will receive an award amount equal to 75% of tuition and applicable fall, spring, and summer fees.

In addition to these two main awards, there are also the:

  • Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program: provides a fixed payment per credit hour which varies by program of study. The program is designed for students who already received an associate degree and are seeking a bachelor’s.
  • Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars program: provides a fixed payment per credit hour which varies with program of study. This program is designed for students who are pursuing a certificate or vocational degree.

  • Test Scores: GSC Scholars have no minimum ACT or SAT score requirement.

Community Service or Paid Work Hours

To be eligible for any of the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Awards, students must complete community service or paid work hours. Students must complete the required number of community service, paid work hours, or a combination of 100 total hours.

  • Community Service: Community Service is defined as identifying a social issue in the community. This requires students to look beyond themselves and reach out to an issue faced by our society (i.e. poverty, abuse, elderly citizen rights). These hours will meet the requirement for the Florida Academic Scholars, Florida Medallion Scholars, or Gold Seal Vocational scholarships.
  • Volunteer Service: Volunteer Service is defined as assisting where needed and does not necessarily address a social issue. Although these hours are not recorded on the transcript, students can keep a log of these activities for use when applying for college, job applications, awards, and scholarships but may not be used for Bright Futures.
  • Paid Work Experience: Paid Work Experience is defined as a job where students earn a weekly or biweekly paycheck and are able to document their work experience through timecards, W-2 statements, or pay stubs. Collect any and all necessary documentation and signatures from the organization where the hours take place.

Award Amounts and Coverage

The Bright Futures Scholarship covers a percentage of tuition and applicable fees, with the specific amount varying depending on the scholarship type:

The scholarship does not cover the $2 per credit hour student facilities use fee nor does it cover the $20 per semester student facilities use fee or the $5 per semester FSUCard term fee. Additional costs assessed to courses such as material and supply fees, electronic and physical book subscriptions, or online course fees are not covered by the program. How to Apply

To apply for the Bright Futures Scholarship, you’ll need to submit the Florida Financial Aid Application (FFAA) by August 31 of the year you graduate from high school.

Key things to keep in mind when applying:

  • All eligibility requirements must be met by high school graduation, but ACT, CLT, and SAT scores taken through August 31 are accepted for evaluation.
  • Once you’ve submitted the FFAA, you’ll be responsible for tracking your application status online. Make sure to keep the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at the Florida Department of Education updated on any changes to your contact information or school.
  • To confirm your scholarship funding, contact your school’s financial aid office.
  • Note: When completing your Florida Financial Aid Application your post-secondary institution must be listed as "Florida State University." If you have selected another institution but are planning to attend Florida State you must update your institution name.

    • Florida Academic Scholars with a 2.75-2.99 GPA at the end of the renewal period will renew as Florida Medallion Scholars. However, raising your GPA above 3.0 during a future renewal period can restore your FAS status using a one-time restoration opportunity.

  • You can start by working to make sure your test scores and GPA are as high as possible.
  • You can maximize your test scores by deciding whether to focus on the SAT or the ACT.
  • You’ll also want to ensure that you fill out the Florida Financial Aid Application before the deadline. Remember, that deadline is August 31 of your graduation year.
  • Also, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Look around for other scholarships, and apply far and wide!

Deferment Options

Students who engage in a military, religious, or service obligation can defer the Bright Futures Scholarship as long as the obligation lasts longer than 18 months.

Bright Futures for Out-of-State Students

If you are a Florida resident who went to school out-of-state, you can still earn a Bright Futures scholarship if you meet certain requirements.

Bright Futures at Private Colleges

Yes! Students attending a private college or university in Florida are eligible to use Bright Futures to help pay for their school. As long as it is on their list of approved programs, it doesn’t matter whether the school you choose is public or private. However, the award may not cover your entire cost of tuition at a private school. Bright Futures offers “comparable awards” to private school attendees, meaning it will be a similar cash value to full tuition at a public school. Since private schools tend to have higher tuition, there is typically more of a gap.

Disbursement Details

The initial award is an estimate based on 15 credits of enrollment in fall/spring or 6 credits in summer. Awards are adjusted to your actual enrollment after the add/drop period each semester. Bright Futures requires a minimum enrollment of 6 credits per semester.
