Understanding Buckingham Browne & Nichols School: Tuition, Financial Aid, and the BB&N Fund

Buckingham Browne & Nichols School (BB&N) is a private PK-12 school located in Cambridge, MA. Known for its challenging, forward-thinking, innovative, and flexible curriculum, BB&N aims to help students from diverse backgrounds reach new levels of accomplishment. As with many independent schools, the cost of tuition can be a significant factor for prospective families. This article explores the tuition costs at BB&N, the financial aid options available, and the role of the BB&N Fund in supporting the school's mission.

Tuition Costs at BB&N

As of the 2024-2025 academic year, tuition at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School is as follows:

  • Lower School (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6): Approximately $45,000 per year.
  • Middle and Upper School (Grades 7-12): Approximately $64,000 per year. Tuition at the Middle School and Upper School rose to $66,900 this year from the previous year’s $63,700.

These figures include costs related to instruction, laboratory and classroom supplies, participation in athletics, and library services, among other essentials. Additional costs, such as books, lunch, transportation, and overnight school trips, are not included in the tuition fee.

The 4.5% increase in tuition this year is similar to the 4.9% average increase in tuition over the past ten years. The $55.1 million budget accounts for the rise in price of commodities and services each of the school’s departments requires and allows the school to compensate its faculty and staff appropriately as the cost of living climbs.

Financial Aid at BB&N

BB&N endeavors to grant each student access to exceptional opportunities and offers a financial aid program to make the school accessible to students regardless of their financial circumstances. Financial assistance is provided to 26% of BB&N students. All financial aid at BB&N comes in the form of education grants, not loans, which means monies are not repaid by the family. Grants are awarded to families that qualify after submitting the application on Clarity and all corresponding financial documentation.

BB&N pledges to meet 100% of demonstrated need for families who qualify. Any tuition grant covers the full extent of demonstrated financial need. Books and lunch are included in the cost of tuition for all students. Financial Aid also offers assistance to students for additional programming/expenses that are not included in the core tuition fee. The amount of aid provided is proportional to the tuition discount awarded.

Families must apply for financial aid every year in order for BB&N to be most responsive to any changes in a family’s circumstances. Provided this situation does not change significantly, families can expect the same percentage of coverage year on year.

The remaining 16.2% of expenses went to need-based financial aid for 25% of students across campuses.

Applying for Financial Aid

If you're considering applying to BB&N, be sure to send in your financial aid application simultaneously with your admissions application. The application process may seem daunting, but the Financial Aid Office is there to guide applicants through every step of it.

Current families applying should complete the Clarity application by January 6, 2026, and submit all 2025 W-2s, if not already uploaded, by January 31, 2026.

The BB&N Fund: Bridging the Gap

Tuition and fees made up 83.5% of the school’s income for the 2024-25 academic year, according to its financial report. Chief Advancement Officer Julie Gray said tuition covers around 85% of the school’s operating costs. As is true at all independent schools, tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a BB&N education. Every year, BB&N relies on the generosity of parents, alumni/ae, past parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends to help bridge the gap between the revenue from tuition and the actual cost of educating a student.

The BB&N Fund raises money to support both BB&N's day-to-day and yearly operating budgets. BB&N Fund dollars are used exclusively to support BB&N’s operating budget. That means they pay for books in the library; soccer balls, hockey pucks, and baseball bats; a favorite teacher's salary; paint brushes, pianos and pottery clay; petri dishes in the chemistry lab, and microscopes for biology; the budget for The Vanguard; the cost of a DJ for a Saturday night dance; and much, much more. The impact of the BB&N Fund cannot be understated.

The school’s expenses are spread across three main areas: faculty salaries and benefits, general operations and financial aid. “Our tuition continues to go up because we want to compensate our faculty,” Chief Financial Officer Tara Gohlmann said. Retaining faculty is a challenge for many schools. Some teachers serve as budget managers and provide input on how tuition should be allocated.

Thoughtful Spending

Dr. Gohlmann and Head of School Jennifer Price work to create a campus master plan that models improvements and renovations for each upcoming academic year. “When the boiler broke at the Lower School, we decided to buy an energy-efficient boiler that was going to save us money over time,” Dr. Gohlmann said. “We did that thoughtfully and spent a little more money because we knew we were going to keep that building.
