Burdwan Raj College: A Legacy of Education in West Bengal

Burdwan Raj College, the oldest educational institution in West Bengal, stands as a beacon of liberal arts education. Established in 1881, it is nestled in the renowned Burdwan district and is affiliated with the esteemed University of Burdwan. The college is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited with a B++ ranking by NAAC, underscoring its academic integrity and commitment to future-focused learning.

Foundation and Early Development

The story of Burdwan Raj College begins long before its formal establishment. In 1817, Maharaj Tej Chand laid the foundation by establishing an Anglo-vernacular school within his palace at Burdwan. This was a significant step towards introducing modern education in the region. The initiative gained further momentum in 1854 when Maharaja Mahatab Chand extended the school and renamed it "High English School". These early efforts demonstrated the Burdwan Raj family's commitment to education and their vision for the future of the region.

The year 1881 marked a turning point in the institution's history. When Aftab Chand became the Maharaja of Burdwan, he shifted the school to Natunganj and, with the permission of the University of Calcutta, introduced Liberal Arts courses. This transformation led to the school being renamed "Raj Collegiate School," with the college section being known as "Burdwan Raj College." This marked the formal establishment of Burdwan Raj College as an institution of higher learning.

Royal Patronage and Government Sponsorship

From its inception, Burdwan Raj College was entirely supported out of the maharaja's estate. This royal patronage played a crucial role in the college's early development and success. The Burdwan Raj family's commitment to education ensured that the college had the resources it needed to provide quality education to its students.

In 1956, the royal patronage of Burdwan Raj College was taken over by the government of West Bengal under the sponsoring scheme. This transition marked a new chapter in the college's history, as it became a state-governed institution. The necessary parting from the University of Calcutta became effective, paving the way for a new affiliation.

The Burdwan Raj Legacy

The history of Burdwan Raj is intertwined with the history of the Burdwan Raj College. The Bardhaman Raj, also known as Burdwan Raj, was a zamindari Raja estate that flourished between 1657 and 1955 in the Indian state of West Bengal. The family's history begins with Sangam Rai, a Khatri of the Kapoor clan, from Kotli, who settled in Baikunthapur near Bardhaman town and devoted himself to commerce and money lending.

The Bardhaman Raj played a significant role in the socio-economic and cultural development of the region. Maharaja Kirti Chand Rai (1702-1740) extended the estates far and wide by attacking and defeating the Raja of Bishnupur. At its height in the early 19th century, it extended to around 5,000 square miles (13,000 km) and included many parts of what is now Burdwan, Bankura, Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly and Murshidabad districts. The dominion had over 2 million people in population.

The family contributed significantly to education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. The establishment and support of Burdwan Raj College is a testament to their commitment to education.
