Understanding Burr and Burton Academy Tuition Fees
Burr and Burton Academy (BBA), located in Manchester, Vermont, is a private, non-profit, co-educational day and boarding school. Founded in 1829, the academy serves students from 13 sending towns, tuitioned students from other towns in Southern Vermont, and international students. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the tuition fees associated with attending BBA, financial aid opportunities, and related policies.
Tuition Structure for 2025-2026 Academic Year
The tuition structure for Burr and Burton Academy varies depending on whether a student resides in a "sending town" or is considered a "non-sending town" or "private-pay" student.
Sending Town Tuition: For the 2025-26 school year, the sending town tuition is $21,972. This rate applies to families residing in Danby, Dorset, Dover, Londonderry, Landgrove, Manchester, Mt. Tabor, Peru, Stratton, Sunderland, Wardsboro, Weston, and Winhall. Families approved as primary residents of a sending town do not require financial aid, as the tuition is covered through state property taxes.
Non-Sending Town or Private-Pay Tuition: For families who do not live in a BBA-sending town, the 2025-26 tuition is $24,721. Those not residing in a sending town may want to consider scholarship and financial aid options.
State Average Tuition: The preliminary state average tuition estimate for the 2025-26 school year is $20,910. Historically, towns such as Mendon, Middletown Springs, Mount Holly/Ludlow, Pawlet, Rupert, Rutland Town, Sandgate, and Wells have annually approved paying the state per-pupil average. The difference between BBA's non-sending/private pay tuition and the estimated state average is $3,815.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities
Burr and Burton Academy offers various financial aid and scholarship opportunities to assist families with tuition costs.
Belltower Merit Scholarship: For local families living in partial-paying communities, Burr and Burton offers the Belltower Merit Scholarship. Student-applicants must complete an academic record review, written essay, and reference check to be considered.
Need-Based Financial Aid: Local families living in non-paying communities may apply for both the Belltower Merit Scholarship and financial aid through Smart Aid, which provides a need-based analysis including a recommendation of what a family should reasonably contribute toward tuition. The service does not decide whether financial assistance will be given or how much to give. Applications are reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee, which makes decisions based on available funds and sends offers to applicants. All students who are awarded financial aid must reapply each year, and all financial aid application information is kept confidential.
Important Considerations Regarding Financial Aid
It is important to note that financial aid awards do not cover special education services for students who attend Burr and Burton as private pay students (those who live outside of Burr and Burton’s traditional sending towns). If a child currently receives support services as outlined within an IEP or Educational Support plan of any kind beyond those provided to the general student population, a parent or guardian will be billed and held responsible for the cost of these additional services. Additionally, if a child is not currently on an educational support plan, but it is determined that they would benefit from accessibility services their parent or guardian would also be responsible for these costs.
International Tuition & Fees
The international tuition covers several essential services and activities, including:
