"I went out there with nerves and couldn’t catch the ball. I dropped my first pass and heard the upperclassman challenging me. Then, I dropped it again! I could hear people snickering, making comments, and suddenly, I felt pressure. Never in my life had I worried about catching a football. I’m a wide receiver! It was a humbling experience. It was a reality check letting me know that I had a lot more work to do on the field." He acknowledged the gap between high school and college-level play, stating, "I thought my high school game would more or less translate to college, but that was not the case!"

Austin's hard work and dedication paid off when he was awarded a scholarship midway through the 2019 season. After Damonte Coxie opted out two games into the 2020 season, he became the No. 1 receiver and began a school-record streak of five consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards. "Focusing on the little details of the game is something I didn’t do until I came to Memphis… I learned more about getting separation with my feet and how to use my hips and shoulders to gain an advantage. I’ve watched probably thousands of hours of tape of myself and my opponents. What my tendencies are, what their weaknesses are, and what I can do to gain any advantage over my competition."
Statistical Achievements and Recognition
Austin's college career was marked by impressive statistics and accolades. He led the AAC in receiving in 2020 with 1,053 yards in 11 games. and was second this season with 1,149 yards. He earned two-time All-AAC first team selection and was one of just three unanimous first team selections this season. He also had three rushing touchdowns and two punt return TDs, including a 94-yard touchdown this season in the Tigers' 31-29 win over Mississippi State. He ended his Tigers career tied for second in touchdown receptions with Carlos Singleton and fourth in receiving yards.
