EA Sports College Football 25: The Highly Anticipated Return
After an 11-year hiatus, EA Sports is bringing back its college football video game series with the release of EA Sports College Football 25. The game's return is a significant event for fans and players alike, marking the end of a long wait and the beginning of a new era for college football gaming.
Release Date and Editions
EA Sports officially announced that the highly anticipated College Football 25 video game will be released on July 19. There will be three different editions of the game: the MVP Bundle, the Deluxe Edition, and the Standard Edition. Both the MVP Bundle and the Deluxe Edition provide early access to the game, beginning on July 16. All editions can be preordered now. The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Cover Athletes and Editions
The cover athletes for EA Sports College Football 25 include Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, and Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, and Ohio State running back Quinshon Judkins can also be seen on the cover of the Deluxe Edition. These athletes are the first active college players to make the cover, thanks to loosened rules allowing players to profit off their name, image, and likeness rights. Previous editions of the game featured a graduating star or a former legend.
The Road to Release: NIL and Legal Battles
The return of EA Sports College Football games is a result of the NCAA v. Alston case, which led to the Supreme Court ruling in favor of player compensation. This ruling allows players to be paid for their name, image, and likeness, which was a major obstacle in the past.
Following the release of the series' previous entry in 2013, Electronic Arts (EA) settled a lawsuit brought by former college football players who argued their name, image, and likeness were used without permission or compensation. Initially, player names and likenesses were not to be included in the game. Because of this, several schools, including Notre Dame, Tulane, and Northwestern refused to join the game until NIL rules were finalized. EA Sports responded by stating "player name, image and likeness is not currently planned for the game. However, we are watching the developments in this area closely and are prepared to take steps to include players should that opportunity arise." At the time, the NCAA had delayed and not voted on new NIL rules, but over two dozen states had either passed or proposed laws so that institutions couldn't enforce the NCAA's NIL rules.

Game Features and Details
All 134 FBS teams will be included in the game. EA Sports made offers to every player on an FBS roster to be a part of the game, with over 12,800 players accepting that offer as of May. EA Sports initially had a goal of getting 87% of all student-athletes to accept the offer and ultimately exceeded that.
EA Sports College Football 25 will be built on the Madden engine but won’t be a reskin of Madden. Dynasty Mode and Road to Glory will be the featured gameplay modes once again. A transfer portal is expected as well. Schools have submitted thousands of assets to EA Sports over the past three years, including stadium photos, jerseys, crowd cheers, and more. College Football Playoff and bowl imagery will be used, and many ESPN broadcasters have already recorded their calls.
Compensation and Participation
Every player who has opted in and been selected for the game will receive $600 and a copy of the game (valued at $70). An additional group of male and female college athletes signed separate ambassador deals to promote the game. Cover athletes also receive more, although the players declined to discuss what they were paid.
