A History of Catawba College Logos: From Tradition to Modernity
Catawba College, an institution with a rich history dating back to 1851, has seen its logos evolve alongside its academic and athletic programs. From its founding in Newton, North Carolina, to its present location in Salisbury, the college's visual identity has reflected its values, traditions, and aspirations. This article explores the history of Catawba College's logos, examining their evolution, significance, and the stories they tell about the institution's journey.
The Early Years: Establishing a Foundation
Catawba College's story began in 1851 in Newton, North Carolina, a bustling commercial center nestled in the western foothills. The region was settled in the 1740s by German pioneers from eastern Pennsylvania, who brought with them a strong cultural and religious heritage. Their commitment to education led to the establishment of the North Carolina Classis of the Reformed Church in 1831 and the Education Society in 1834. It was at an 1849 meeting of the Classis that the idea of founding a college "of our own in our own midst" was proposed.
Catawba College opened its doors with a gift of 10 acres of land and a capital investment of $15,000. Named after the Catawba Indian tribe, whose name was already associated with the county and nearby river, the college experienced initial prosperity.
The "Indians" Nickname and Initial Logo Adoption
Catawba College began competitive athletics in the early part of the 20th century. After relocating to Salisbury in 1925, the college formally adopted the name "Indians" for its athletic teams on February 19, 1927, by unanimous vote of the student body with the support of the Catawba College Athletic Association. One of the main reasons for this was the College’s name, Catawba, derived from the native people of the region.
The Block "C": A Symbol of History
The block "C" logo was the logo the school used from around 1935 to 1962, according to Catawba College officials. In April 2022, Catawba College announced the return of the College’s historic block C as the official athletic logo of the College. The historic block C logo served the College for the greatest length of time in the College’s history.

Transition and Evolution: The Stylized "C" and Feathers
Over time, the college's logo evolved, with a stylized "C" and feathers becoming a familiar symbol. This design represented Catawba's connection to its namesake, the Catawba Indian tribe, while also embodying the spirit and pride of its athletic teams.
NCAA Scrutiny and the Catawba Nation's Support
In August 2005, the NCAA Executive Committee issued guidance prohibiting NCAA colleges and universities from displaying "hostile and abusive racial/ethnic/national origin mascots, nicknames or imagery." Catawba College and its "Indians" nickname were explicitly listed as impacted by this policy.
However, in October 2005, the Catawba College Board of Trustees authorized a formal appeal to the NCAA for the continued use of the athletic nickname, Indians. The late Chief Gilbert Blue of the Catawba Nation voiced support for the College to continue using Indians as the College’s athletic nickname. In May 2006, the NCAA ruled that Catawba College could use the athletic nickname, Catawba Indians specifically, not Indians, without penalty, citing support from the Catawba Nation as the rationale for its continued use.
In 2007, Catawba College and the Catawba Nation agreed to continue using the athletic nickname, Catawba Indians, in exchange for a full-tuition scholarship for a Catawba Nation student every four years. This scholarship agreement remained in effect through the 2021-22 academic year until the number of scholarships was increased this year.
The 2022 Rebrand: A Return to Tradition
In April 2022, Catawba College announced the return of the historic block "C" as the official athletic logo. According to Catawba College officials, the block C was the logo the school used from around 1935 to 1962. The College’s administration was responsible for the re-adoption of the historic block C as the College’s official athletic logo. Catawba College students did not petition nor request the retirement of any previous athletic logo, nor were the previous collection of athletic logos used from the 1980s to 2022 retired due to a request from the NCAA, the Catawba Nation, or any other entity or agreement, including Nike. Furthermore, the previous athletic logos were not retired because they included elements often associated with Native American imagery.

The decision to revert to the block "C" was met with mixed reactions. Some alumni and supporters expressed disappointment, feeling that the change abandoned a familiar and cherished symbol. Others, however, welcomed the return to a more traditional and historic look.
Michelle Caddigan, Director of Athletics, addressed the concerns, stating, "We haven’t had a lot of consistency with our brand and in order for us to be strong and powerful and to move forward, we needed consistency." She emphasized that the change was not new but rather "reverting back to our history."
Head football coach Curtis Walker saw the new logo as a "fresh start," an opportunity to usher in a new era for the team. Some student-athletes also expressed support for the new branding, with one student, Katie Webb, who served on the design team, noting that she hadn't "heard that many negative comments from the student body."
The Introduction of "Blue": A Sideline Mascot
As the College has not had a sponsored mascot since the early 2000s, the College began exploring the adoption of an official sideline mascot. In partnership with Summit Athletics, Blue was born and endorsed by the College Board of Trustees in October 2024. The committee also collaborated with Street Characters, a world-renowned mascot solutions company in Canada, to manufacture the mascot costume.
In addition to the sideline mascot, Catawba College announced a brand extension that includes secondary logos (listed below) that incorporate Blue. These include a stylized cat head and an interlocking design with the College's traditional Block C.

SALISBURY, N.C. - Catawba College proudly unveiled Blue, a Catawba Cat, as the Catawba Indians' official sideline mascot at a launch celebration on Stanback Plaza on Thursday morning.
"This is a historic and exciting moment for Catawba College and our community," stated Michelle Caddigan, Catawba's Vice President of Athletics. "The unveiling of our new sideline mascot marks the beginning of a new chapter - one that brings unity, pride, and renewed energy to all who love this place and call it home. I am grateful to the committee for their thoughtful work and for everyone who shared their voices throughout this process. This sideline mascot isn't just a symbol; it reflects our story and our spirit.
The sideline mascot will not change the Catawba Indian nickname employed by the athletic department for each of its 24 intercollegiate sports.
Originally, the mascot search began in the spring of 2020 but was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A new steering committee was formed in the summer of 2023 to design a mascot that would honor the College's tradition as well as the Catawba Nation, be embraced warmly by alumni, students, and friends of college, and be marketable and relatable to the greater College and Salisbury communities.
Navy veteran and chief of the Catawba Indian Nation from 1973 to 2007. A strong supporter of Catawba College, Blue led the movement for the Catawba Nation to receive federal recognition and backed Catawba College's use of the Catawba Indian nickname.
"The introduction of Blue is such an exciting moment for our campus community," said Jodi Bailey, Director of Marketing and Communications at Catawba. "Blue embodies the pride, passion, and energy of our students, alumni, and fans. We can't wait to see the joy and pride Blue brings to Catawba game days and events.
A Lasting Partnership with the Catawba Nation
Throughout its history, Catawba College has maintained a strong relationship with the Catawba Nation. The college's continued use of the "Catawba Indians" nickname is a testament to this partnership, with agreements in place to provide scholarships and opportunities for Catawba Nation students.
In the Spring of 2022, Catawba College and the Catawba Nation entered into a new agreement to offer a full-tuition scholarship on an annual basis to a Catawba Nation citizen and mutually pledged to continue strengthening our partnership through additional educational pathways and opportunities in the new future.
