Castro noted, "I think for all of us student athletes, no matter the major, it gets overwhelming dealing with our studies and also the stress and anxiety of playing in our sports."
Emily Cooper ‘27, a participant in women's cross-country and an Environmental Interior Design student, shared her positive takeaways from the GRIT event. She stated that she "walked away from the GRIT event with new friendships and self-reflections that grew out of group discussions and prayers." Cooper found common ground with her fellow student-athletes, remarking, "Getting to know strangers can be a great part of self-confidence because it helped me learn more about myself as a group listener and speaker. My favorite part was listening to everyone’s goals and life journeys. Hearing the diverse backgrounds of everyone was inspiring and really made me realize the biggest steps in life come from accepting new opportunities."
Dustyn Ragasa, Ph.D., Director of the Master of Pastoral Theology program and an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Philosophy, addressed students at the gatherings on January 28 and February 5. His message resonated with the idea, "You’ve got GRIT, why not share it?" Ragasa posited, "Student-athletes are in an excellent position to be ‘women and men for others,’ a key characteristic of Catholic education. I hope the students walk away with a greater sense of confidence in the best of themselves, a call to leaven our campus community with the gifts that they possess, but above all, some memories they make." He further underscored the significance of events like the GRIT gatherings in fostering student connection, reflection, and enjoyment, acknowledging that "For busy student-athletes, it can be a challenge to set aside some time just to talk story or to share a meal."
A Rich History and Foundation
Chaminade University of Honolulu, originally founded in 1955 by the Society of Mary, has a distinguished history. The university is situated in Kaimuki, Honolulu, at the base of St. Louis Heights. Its origins trace back to September 1883, when eight Marianist priests established Saint Louis School, which today serves as a middle and high school for boys. In 1955, Saint Louis Junior College was opened, and upon transitioning to a four-year institution, it was renamed Chaminade College in 1957. The Society of Mary, or Marianists, are a religious order of brothers and priests dedicated to the vision of Father William Joseph Chaminade, a French Catholic priest who founded the Society in 1817 and who himself survived persecution during the French Revolution.
