Chick-fil-A's Vidalia Scholarship Program: Empowering Futures Through Education

Since the early 1970s, Chick-fil-A has been committed to supporting its Team Members' educational aspirations through scholarship funds. The Vidalia Scholarship program, a component of Chick-fil-A's broader Remarkable Futures initiative, exemplifies this commitment. The Remarkable Futures Scholarship program encourages Team Members to apply for scholarships every year. Through this program, Chick-fil-A recognizes remarkable individuals who share dedication to caring for others and their communities. The scholarship checks are made payable to the school and cannot be applied toward student loans or refunded to students.

Eligibility Criteria for the Vidalia Scholarship

To be eligible for the Vidalia Scholarship, Team Members must meet specific criteria:

  • Employment Status: Team Members need to be employed at a franchised, company-owned and/or affiliated restaurant at the time of application and award. Specifically, they must be an employee at a franchised or company-owned restaurant (including Dwarf House Group, LLC (Dwarf House®, Truett’s Chick-fil-A®, Truett’s Luau®, Chick-fil-A® of Edgewater, Truett’s Grill®)) at the time of application. Team Members must be employed at an eligible restaurant at the time of the application and when the award is announced.

  • Recommendation: A recommendation from an Operator, Interim Manager, or Executive General Manager (depending on the Restaurant where the Team Member is employed) is required. This recommendation should address the Team Member’s professional achievement. Professional achievement could include testimony of demonstrated leadership, work ethic, teamwork, and other contributions.

  • Demonstrated Care and Service: Candidates need to show how they demonstrated care and service in the twelve (12) months prior to application.

  • Academic Achievements: While not explicitly stated in the provided information, academic awards and recognition will be considered for candidates. (For Canadian and Puerto Rican candidates, transcripts are reviewed separately and scored accordingly.)

It's important to note that there is no requirement of hours worked or length of service to qualify.

Scholarship Awards and Distribution

Chick-fil-A sponsors the offering of three scholarship awards - $1,000, $2,500, and $25,000. Every year, at least twelve (12) $25,000 scholarships are awarded to students based on academic success, community service and financial need.

In 2025, Chick-fil-A distributed $27 million in scholarship funds from its Remarkable Futures Program - the largest education investment to date for the chain. Scholarship giving and other education initiatives continue to expand, with scholarship awards tripling over the past five years in both the number of recipients and total amount awarded.

Awards can be used for tuition, fees, books and education-related expenses incurred at any accredited college, university or vocational/technical school.

Additional Benefits for Team Members

Beyond scholarships, Chick-fil-A Team Members can also get tuition discounts. These discounts lower the cost of thousands of programs from accredited colleges and universities nationwide - all built to fit a busy schedule.

Controversy Surrounding Scholarship Awards

Recently, a photo of Chick-fil-A scholarship recipients sparked outrage. The post stirred outrage and controversy online from many who believed that racial discrimination was a factor in why Bacon received the smallest amount, since she was the only Black staff member pictured receiving $1,000. The $2,500 and $1,000 scholarship tiers have the same requirements.

Atlanta Black Star reached out to Chick-fil-A for comment. A company spokesperson did not have details on Bacon’s application or why she only received $1,000, but told Atlanta Black Star that four other white Vidalia staff members who weren’t photographed at the restaurant’s award ceremony also received $1,000 scholarships.

Delegal wrote on the GoFundMe page. “This post is circulating about Chick-Fil-A scholarship winners and I’m going to put that post in the comments but I really wish yall would look into things before you’re outraged. The other post circulating shows a few scholarship winners and shows how the one Blk employee got $1000 while the few other Yt and Hispanic employees got $2500 and people are in an uproar. As if these those were the only scholarship winners… so here you go, blk scholarship winners of 25,000 not the 2,500 u were upset about. Also some information on their scholarship program and just wanted to throw in there that they still support DEI initiatives.

A Mother's Perspective

My daughter J'Da Bacon is a sophomore at the University of West Georgia where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Sciences in Speech Pathology. Her ultimate goal is to pursue a doctorate and become a practicing Speech Pathologist! While we understand that the ultimate goal is to be able to complete her matriculation debt-free, we also value the support from all community members and any scholarship sponsors that have believed in her efforts, character, and academic prowess.

Recently, her scholarship award photos were shared online and created a stir. Although we did initially question the award amount, we were extremely grateful for having even been considered! J'Da continues to be a faithful and committed employee of Chick-fil-A and will always support their outreach efforts, community initiatives, and future opportunities for partnership. Some community members have expressed shared concerns about her award amount in comparison to others, and we greatly appreciate your concern and willingness to continue supporting J'Da on her academic journey.

Chick-fil-A's Enduring Commitment to Education

Chick-fil-A has sponsored more than $191 million in scholarships to more than 105,000 Team Members, continuing a legacy of supporting education opportunities that dates back more than five decades.
