City College Nursing Program: Requirements and Opportunities

Program Overview
The Registered Nursing (RN) program at City College is a two-year program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). The program prepares entry-level nurses with the knowledge and skills needed to provide quality patient care. Students are taught the competencies of the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and upon graduation will have earned an Associate in Science (AS) Degree and eligibility to take the RN National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX).
During the RN program, you will take a series of courses that combine academic classes on campus, skills practice in the nursing skills laboratory, and patient care experience in various hospitals and facilities in the San Francisco area. Upon successful completion of RN program, you will be qualified to pass the NCLEX-RN exam and qualify for entry-level positions of Registered Nursing in health facilities and agencies.
The clinical laboratory experiences will occur in local hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, ambulatory care clinics, community settings and/or the SCC Simulation Lab. The SCC RN Program utilizes a very high percentage of clinical time in direct patient care settings as the cornerstone to learning the foundational practices in nursing care. The program includes clinical rotations in many specialties including: geriatrics, adult care, pediatric, obstetrics, psych-mental health and nursing leadership. Classroom learning includes some online learning with the majority of each course delivered with the in-person method.
Admission Requirements
Applying to the Registered Nursing Program requires an application separate from the CCSF admissions process. Applicants will be evaluated by current admission requirements and selected using a multi-criteria and lottery system. All college courses listed below must be completed before the admitting semester's application filing period to qualify for lottery selection.

Here's a breakdown of the key requirements:
- Academic Prerequisites:
- Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 in Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, and English 1A courses.
- No grade lower than a “C” in any of the above prerequisite courses.
- An applicant can repeat only one of the science courses listed in Group A: Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology. More than one repetition of any of these courses will disqualify the applicant.
- All of the courses listed in group A must be completed. The course number are those listed for City College of San Francisco. Courses are taken at other colleges or universities or subject to evaluation for equivalency (combined courses of Sciences, e.g.
- ATI TEAS Exam:
- The ATI TEAS exam, a diagnostic assessment test (basic math, English, reading, and science), must be taken before the application filing period ends.
- All applicants must also pass the ATI TEAS in addition to meeting other requirements.
- Official TEAS results are required with the nursing application. Only the first two attempts will be considered.
- Those applicants who do not receive an overall composite score of 62% on the ATI TEAS test must successfully complete a remediation plan and remediation coursework. The student must demonstrate successful completion of the remediation plan over one year and successful retaking of the ATI TEAS test with a passing score in order to be eligible for admission. If an applicant does not successfully complete the remediation plan and coursework or pass the exam the applicant is disqualified.
- NOTE: If you have already passed the ATI TEAS, you must have the official transcript(s) sent by ATI to LACC of all attempts and versions. If you are interested in taking the ATI TEAS exam at LACC, you must submit your application within the first week of the filing period. Those who fail to achieve a passing score will be required to complete a remediation plan within one year of the initial testing date.
- Application Process:
- Complete a City College of San Francisco application for admission or readmission.
- Submit the application during the enrollment period stated on page 3 and make an appointment with the Chairperson of the Nursing Department to plan your program.
- The Nursing Department will only evaluate and consider completed applications with the proper documents uploaded.
- Your complete application, ATI TEAS results, and all official transcripts will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. If approved, your application will be placed in the random lottery.
- The applicant completes application online and submits online. Check MyPortal to confirm that your official transcripts have been received. You must submit separate RN and VN program applications if interested in both programs.
- Documents within the application must be in pdf form. are accepted. If document is unreadable it will be disqualified. official transcripts must be uploaded to the application. be in its own pdf. - Additional Recommendations:
- It is recommended to meet with a CCSF counselor if you are interested in pursuing a Registered Nursing Degree.
- The Nursing Faculty also recommends prospective nursing students to take both Medical Terminology Noncredit courses (VOC ED 400CE & VOC ED 435CE) before getting admitted to the program. The Nursing Faculty strongly encourages students to complete the coursework below prior to entering the nursing program.
- Many prospective Nursing students will have completed coursework outside of LACCD. If a course is not listed in our TES database, the student may submit an online request and choose the dropdown box we recently added “Pre-Nursing Admissions” or indicate such in the comments section.
- You must attend a mandatory Information Session. (See Information Session Announcement for how to RSVP).
Important Considerations
- Criminal Background Check and Drug Screening: Many of our hospitals with which we affiliate require that all students undergo Criminal Background Check and urine screening for drugs and alcohol. These services are provided by a third party affiliate, and the cost for these services must be paid for by the students. We will provide the written instructions for your online registration and payment. A breakdown of the costs will be provided during orientation. - LVN to RN Advanced Placement: Licensed Vocational Nurses with a current and active California license may apply to the Nursing Program as “Advanced Placement” status.
- Military Experience: Individuals who present with relevant military education and experience equal to but not limited to Basic Medical Technician Corpsman (Navy HM or Air Force BMTCP), Army Health Care Specialist (68W Army Medic) or Air Force Independent Duty Medical Technician (IMDT 4N0X1C) are eligible for advanced placement at the City College of San Francisco Registered Nursing Program. Application and supporting documents will be reviewed by the Non-Generic Admissions Committee. If the applicant meets criteria for challenge, the Non-Generic Admissions Committee will schedule the candidate to complete the challenge exam(s) for all applicable courses.
Curriculum Overview
Graduation requirements from the R.N. Program will include all courses in Groups A & B plus additional General Education Courses. The ADN-BSN Program is a collaborative nursing program between CCSF and San Francisco State University.
At the present time, the R.N. curriculum courses you will be taking will be Nursing 50A & 50B (Pharmacology in Nursing, Parts 1 and 2), Nursing 55 (Psychiatric Nursing), Nursing 56 (Advanced Medical-Surgical Nursing), and Nursing 58 (Trends and Issues in Nursing).
Alternative Pathways
- 30-Unit Option Program: Passing the licensing exam under this 30-Unit Option Program will result in R.N. licensure for California as a “Non Graduate”. There is no guarantee that the license is transferable to other states. It is up to the license holder to contact other states’ Boards of Registered Nursing to inquire if the California 30- Unit Option Program R.N.
- LVN-RN Curriculum: the LVN to become associate degree prepared, entry-level Registered Nurses. Students who complete this option will take NCLEX-RN as a non-graduate thereby not receiving a degree. This status will not change even if student goes on to obtain a degree. There is no restriction to practice within California but there is in other States. The student may have difficulty transferring to another state or territory without a degree.
Important Considerations for Enrolled Students
- Students accepted into this program will be required to successfully complete clinically-based courses held in health care facilities. Health care facilities also require adherence to strict standards of conduct. standards of safety, health, and ethical behavior.

- Accreditation: The California Board of Registered Nursing protects the public by screening applicants for licensure in order to identify potentially unsafe practitioners.
