The Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement utilizes TribeCareers (powered by Symplicity) to share jobs, internships, and externships with all undergraduate William & Mary students; graduate College of Arts & Sciences, Batten School of Costal & Marine Science, School of Computing, Data Science, and Physics, and School of Education students; and alumni.

Micro-Internships via Parker Dewey
The Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement partners with Parker Dewey, a platform that facilitates posting and recruiting for paid, predominately virtual, micro-internships for a variety of organizations across many industries. Micro-internships are short-term, project-based experiences. Projects completed through Parker Dewey are available to international students who are either affiliated with one of our partner programs or those attending a US-based college or university. These unique projects are posted at all times of year by companies of all sizes, from Fortune 100 corporations to emerging startups. There is no official cutoff, but Parker Dewey is designed to help early career professionals launch their careers. Students and recent graduates from all majors can gain real-world experience by completing short-term, paid, typically-remote, professional projects. Micro-Internships fill fast!
Whole of Government Center of Excellence (WGC) National Security Internship Program (NSIP)
In cooperation with campus partners, the Whole of Government Center of Excellence (WGC) National Security Internship Program (NSIP) is a community hub for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers related to defense, intelligence, and other related work. WGC works with federal stakeholders and students to create transformative opportunities to serve the nation and Commonwealth of Virginia. With many of these positions, students are granted a security clearance, which can lead to other opportunities in the broader national security community. The program includes opportunities with the Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Intelligence Directorate, Diplomatic Courier magazine, and the maritime security industry. and world. Our specialty is the defense and intelligence sector, but this is not exclusive.

International Internships
A generous grant from the Freeman Foundation has made it possible for up to 24 William & Mary undergraduates to conduct unpaid internships in Asia since the summer of 2018. The purpose of this program is to provide students with a range of professional opportunities in structured, real-world settings that will allow them to clarify their career goals, enhance their career preparation, and develop their cultural competencies. Study abroad program internships range widely in terms of delivery method and content. Some internships are NOT eligible for transfer credit, or may otherwise fall short of requirements for transfer credit, which can impact full-time enrollment status and/or financial aid eligibility. The Cohen Career Center is responsible for advising and providing information about non-credit bearing international internships and employment to undergraduate students. The program offers undergraduate students fellowship awards that enable them to travel to Argentina and spend eight weeks engaged in hands-on work with Argentina’s Comisión Provincial por la Memoria (CPM- Memory Commission), staff addressing human rights issues, past and present. Training on inventory, materials, and packaging.
Academic Credit for Internships
Qualified students, usually in their junior or senior year, may receive credit from cooperating academic departments for an approved internship that provides an opportunity to apply and expand knowledge in the student's field of study. To qualify, internships should be designed to provide a structured learning experience that is completed under expert supervision. A student needs to navigate the college's credit approval process in advance of an internship's start date.
Externship Opportunities
The W&M TribeShadow Externship Program is a collaborative effort between the Office of Career Development & Professional Engagement and engaged employers, alumni, and family members to generate positive job shadowing experiences for W&M students. Externships typically last one to two days over winter break and provide students with an inside look at a given industry. Additionally, students gain insight into networking etiquette, as well as demonstrating their experiences as part of their professional story.

Posting Micro-Internships
Does your organization have a project that needs to get done? Consider posting a micro-internship (a short-term, professional project) through our partnership with Parker Dewey. Registration is required and there is no posting fee.
Part-Time and Seasonal Jobs
Part-time jobs are typically temporary and require a person to work less than 40 hours per week. To recruit students for off-campus part-time and seasonal jobs (excluding unpaid internships), such as yard work, babysitters, tutors, etc., we ask that you complete a job request form.
Internship Types and Compensation
Internships may be paid or unpaid and completed for academic credit or non-credit bearing. While some employers will be looking for juniors or seniors for their internships, there are options for students of all class years.
The Value of Internships
The benefits of internships for both students and employers are undisputable. Employers indicate that internship experience is the most influential factor they consider when deciding between two otherwise equally qualified job candidates, and nearly 80% of interns are offered full-time positions. In fact, a recent survey indicated that 70% of employers make full-time job offers to interns.
