Admission Requirements: A Holistic Review

The CMC Admission Committee closely evaluates every facet of the application, both academic and non-academic. Admission is based on a holistic review process, considering a broad range of factors, including academic and leadership achievements, commitment to CMC’s values, and potential to contribute to CMC’s mission.

Academic Factors

High School Record: The committee considers the strength of the school, courses taken, grades earned, rank in class (if available), and counselor and teacher recommendations. Competitive candidates pursue the most demanding coursework possible and receive strong grades. While there is no minimum GPA requirement, a GPA of at least 3.3 is recommended for serious consideration, transcript(s) from all secondary schools attended.
Minimum Recommended High School Program:
- Four years of English
- Three (preferably four) years of mathematics at least through precalculus (Calculus is recommended)
- At least three years of a foreign language (this can be three total years or up to the third level)
- At least one year of history
- At least two years of science
Test-Optional Policy: For the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 application cycles, CMC is test-optional, meaning students are not required to submit standardized test scores (SAT/ACT) for admission. However, if a student submits scores, they will be used in the evaluation of their application. CMC anticipates returning to a test-required policy effective for the Fall 2028 application cycle.
Submitting Test Scores: Those who submit scores (ACT, SAT, or both) can either submit self-reported or official scores. Enrolled applicants who included test scores during the application process will be required to send official test scores prior to the first day of classes.
Superscore Policy: CMC will continue to superscore the ACT or SAT by accepting the highest scores from each section, regardless of the test date. Students must self-report all subsections from each test date.

Non-Academic Factors

Extracurricular Involvement: The Admission Committee considers extracurricular involvement very carefully, looking for students who are talented and active both inside and outside the classroom.
Essays: Essays provide insight into who you are as a person, not just academically. The supplemental essay prompts are found in both the Common Application and the Coalition Application.
Recommendations: Teacher recommendations are important in giving the Admission Committee insight into your engagement in classes, collaboration with peers, and ability to manage rigorous classwork. The school report and counselor recommendation provide the Admission Committee with important context about your high school.
Interviews: Interviews are evaluative and recommended, but not required (all homeschooled applicants are required to interview). Only students who have completed their junior year of high school will be able to schedule an admission interview.

First-year applicants can apply as soon as the applications are available, generally on August 1. CMC accepts The Common Application for Undergraduate College Admission (Common App), The Coalition Application for Access, Affordability, and Success, and the QuestBridge Application for first-year candidates.

Early Decision

If CMC is a student’s clear first choice, they may apply under one of CMC’s two Early Decision options. The Early Decision option is a binding agreement. If accepted, the student is expected to withdraw all other applications and not initiate any new applications at other institutions. The only difference between the Early Decision I (November 1) and Early Decision II (January 10) options is the application submission deadline.

Admission Statistics

Acceptance Rate: Claremont McKenna College has an acceptance rate of approximately 10%, making it an extremely selective institution.
GPA: The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. requires you to be at the top of your class. You'll need nearly straight A's in all your classes to compete with other applicants. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4.13, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.

Additional Information for Specific Applicants

International Students

Students who are citizens of foreign countries (international applicants) must complete the same admission requirements as domestic first-year or transfer applicants using the Common Application or the Coalition Application. However, international students must also submit evidence that they are sufficiently fluent in English to be able to successfully complete all coursework without undue handicap. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available for international students.

Home-Schooled Students

CMC welcomes applications from home-schooled students. All home-schooled applicants are required to follow regular application procedures, including submission of the Common Application or the Coalition Application. All homeschooled applicants are required to interview.

Transfer Students

All students wishing to transfer from another college or university must submit transcripts of all college work and their final high school transcripts. Transfer applications must also submit the College Report completed by an official at their current or most recent institution. The College Report confirms that the student is leaving or has left their institution in good standing. Students should have a GPA of at least 3.3 for serious consideration.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Expanding student opportunity is one of CMC’s core priorities. The college removes financial barriers through its need-blind and meet-all-need commitments. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is available for international students.

Merit-Based Scholarships

Merit-based scholarships are available for first-year applicants and are determined by the Office of Admission through the application review process.

The McKenna Achievement Award: A renewable \$15,000 scholarship given to approximately 25 incoming first-year students each year.
The Frank Seaver Leadership Scholarship: A renewable full-tuition scholarship given to approximately three entering first-year students every year.

Deferring Enrollment

Students may wish to defer their enrollment (also known as taking a gap year) to Claremont McKenna for a year, up to two years, after admission. To defer your matriculation to Claremont McKenna for a year, students must submit their enrollment deposit by May 1 and complete the deferral form detailing their intention to defer by May 5.
