  • Student-Internships: These are volunteer positions designed to enable students to complete degree requirements and/or develop an initial behind the scenes understanding of operations with the CUAD. It is expected that Student-Interns are first and foremost successful students. To that end, staff supervisors are charged with emphasizing the academic success of student-interns, serving as mentors to students under their supervision, and providing them with supplemental learning opportunities through their internships.
  • Student-Assistantships: These are scholarship positions designed to enable students to embed within a specific program or support area and develop a comprehensive understanding of operations within that area. Similar to Student-Interns, it is expected that Student-Assistants are first and foremost successful students. To that end, staff supervisors are charged with emphasizing the academic success of Student-Assistants, serving as mentors to students under their supervision, and providing them with supplemental learning opportunities through their assistantships.
  • Student-Employment: These are paid positions designed to ensure a specific function of the department’s operations is fulfilled. Similar to Student-Interns and Student-Assistants, Student-Employees will also be supervised and mentored by full-time staff members who will support their development. Successful performance in these roles is essential for continued employment.

Internships in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences (CAFLS)

Internships and co-ops provide a great opportunity for you to gain work experience and connect with professionals in your field before graduating. CAFLS students actively participate in a wide variety of internships, often in their discipline of choice. Internships are often key to gaining employment upon graduation and required for many of our CAFLS majors.

Earning Class Credit for Internships

If you are receiving class credit, yes! Talk with your advisor and get signed up for the appropriate internship class. Many of our students do internships outside of those required for class credit. This is highly encouraged! Many employers are interested in newly graduated students who already have working experience, even if it is just for a few months!

Benefits of CAFLS Internships

Internships are a way to gain experience in your major field, thus validating what you are studying. You can also gain valuable professional skills and connections with people in your field, possibly leading to references and recommendations.

Timing and Location of Internships

This can vary by opportunity. Many students complete their internships during the summer between their sophomore and junior years. Our students have done their internships abroad and closer to home. But you can do an internship wherever you like. You will need to get pre-approval of your internship plans from your respective internship coordinator IF you are seeking Clemson credit.

The Co-op Program

The Co-op Program is a dynamic academic program that is widely recognized as one of the top in the country!
