Clemson University Student Parking: A Comprehensive Guide

Clemson University addresses the perennial challenge of student parking through a multifaceted approach encompassing updated regulations, technological innovation, and diverse transportation alternatives. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of parking permits, regulations, and transportation options available to Clemson students, ensuring a smoother and more informed parking experience.

Updated Parking Regulations

Starting in Fall 2026, Clemson University will implement updated parking regulations to restrict on-campus vehicle access for first-year and Bridge students. This initiative aims to alleviate congestion and enhance on-campus programming, aligning with the university's commitment to delivering an exceptional student experience. Further details regarding the implementation process and waiver options for students with demonstrated needs will be communicated in the future.

Parking Permits: Virtual and Physical

All students parking a car on campus are required to purchase a permit. Clemson utilizes a virtual permit system, where your license plate acts as your permit. It is imperative to park your vehicle with the license plate clearly visible to ensure proper identification by the automated license plate recognition (ALPR) software.

Resident Student Permits

All resident students are issued virtual permits based on housing assignments, which means that your vehicle's license plate serves as your permit.

Commuter Student Permits

Commuting students will receive a physical permit.

Temporary Permits

Commuter students parking on campus occasionally may consider forgoing an annual permit and purchase temporary daily permits online or temporary daily hang tag permits from the Parking and Transportation Services Office at a cost of $5 per day.

If you have a current virtual permit for your vehicle and must temporarily drive another vehicle, you may request a temporary parking permit from Parking and Transportation Services.

If you have a current repositionable permit for your vehicle and must temporarily drive another vehicle, you should move your permit to the alternate vehicle and link your license plate to your permit online.

Linking Your License Plate to Your Permit

To link your vehicle license plate to your parking permit, follow these steps:

  1. Select "View Your Permits."
  2. Select the permit you wish to add your vehicle to.
  3. Scroll down the page and select "Add Vehicle to Permit."
  4. You will see all the vehicles currently attached to your parking record but not linked to the permit you selected.
  5. You can select any of those vehicles if you still own and are responsible for it, or you may add an additional vehicle.
  6. Link only vehicles that are owned and operated by you.
  7. You are responsible for any citations issued to your parking permit or vehicle(s) that are linked to your account.
  8. All permits have a vehicle limit according to permit type.
  9. Select "Vehicles" at the top of the page. If you see any vehicles that you no longer own, please contact Parking and Transportation Services to remove them.

If you do not have a temporary state-issued license plate (i.e., a dealer plate) for your vehicle, for the state, select "Missing Plate/VIN.” For the license plate, enter the last 10 characters of your VIN number. Next, you will be asked to enter your entire VIN#.

Fall vs. Annual Permits

Purchase an annual parking permit if your plans are to attend the full academic year. Fall semester parking permits are reserved for students who will not be attending the Spring semester, such as candidates for graduation, co-op participants, and student interns. Selecting ‘Student Bill_iROAR’ to charge your Fall permit to your Fall student bill is highly encouraged.

Fall semester parking permits expire at 5:00 PM EST on the first day of Fall semester classes and are not available for the Spring semester. Debit or credit cards are accepted for payment.

Parking Permit Refunds

If you wish to return your unexpired parking permit for a prorated refund, you may do so at Parking and Transportation Services until March 15. If you have a physical permit, bring your parking permit to Parking and Transportation Services. Please note that the refund will not be immediate.

Parking Regulations and Enforcement

All parking regulations, including meters, are in effect at all times, including holidays, between semesters, and after business hours.

Disability Parking

Any student who displays a state-issued disability parking permit to park on the campus of Clemson University is required to register the permit with Parking and Transportation Services prior to use on campus. This requirement aims to reduce unauthorized use and increase the availability of disability-access parking spaces for legitimate users.

Loading and Unloading

For loading and unloading, metered spaces are strategically located throughout campus. Alternatively, you can visit Parking & Transportation Services to receive a one-hour Loading/Unloading zone permit. Meters must be paid to park.

Parking Over Breaks

Students can leave their vehicles on campus between the end of Summer Session II and the start of the Fall semester.

Graduate students who are working on campus over a University break are permitted to obtain a temporary employee parking placard to park in select assigned employee parking lots.

Parking for Summer Classes

New Clemson Students attending summer classes and programs are permitted to bring cars to campus for the Summer. All students parking a car on campus are required to purchase a permit. Your license plate is now your permit. To correctly identify your vehicle when parked, if you are not parallel parking, please pull into parking spots so that your vehicle license plate is visible from the travel lane. If you are a commuting student, you will receive a physical permit. If you are attending summer classes, you will need to purchase the 2024-2025 annual permit. NOTE: Summer permits are valid until August 15, 2025. You will have to purchase an additional permit for the 2025-26 academic year when they are available for sale in late-July. 2025-2026 parking permits will be available for purchase in late July 2025. Select "Get Permits" and choose the 2026 student permit. New students must park according to their permit's parking rules and regulations. All student permits are valid in all student spaces Monday, May 12 - Friday, August 8, 2025. For example, commuter permits are valid in resident spaces. Resident permits are valid in commuter spaces. If you park in a metered space, you must PAY THE METER and have a valid permit. Some metered locations are for Visitors Only and are not valid for student parking.

Parking Enforcement

Clemson utilizes License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology for parking enforcement. LPR is an integrated system of cameras and software mounted on Parking and Transportation Services enforcement vehicles. These cameras scan vehicle license plates, and the software transmits the information to a secure parking database for validation in real-time. This system enables enforcement officers to patrol and cover the entire campus multiple times per day.

Parking Options and Initiatives

Clemson University has introduced various transportation and parking incentives to alleviate parking challenges. These include:

Smart Parking Initiative

Clemson University has partnered with Eleven-X to launch a smart parking initiative, implementing the eXact ParkSmart platform across the 17,000-acre campus. The initiative utilizes advanced technology to determine parking availability and provide real-time information to students and staff. This includes the installation of over 10,000 parking sensors, more than 40 digital signs, and the Eleven-X’s eXactnav mobile parking app.

CATbus Routes

Expanding CATbus routes.

Shuttle Buses

Implementing shuttle buses.

Carpooling

Offering carpooling options. This past fall and spring semesters, 290 students bought carpool permits, reducing on-campus parking by 151 cars, according to Hofmann. Motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds are excluded from the carpool program.

Park-N-Ride

Commuter students, faculty and staff can purchase a Park-N-Ride permit for just $50 rather than purchasing a standard commuter or employee permit. Furthermore, the introduction of shuttle buses and the park-n-ride program has also significantly eased parking congestion by reducing the number of cars on the main campus by 1,101, Hofmann said.

Electric Vehicle (EV) Program

Electric Vehicle (EV) Program Permits are for resident, commuter, or park-n-ride students who own an electric vehicle and wish to charge it at Clemson University. When purchased with a student permit.

Clemson University Shuttle Bus Options

Clemson University also offers shuttle bus options through Tiger Transit. Tiger Transit offers campus routes, community routes, and airport shuttles, catering to a variety of needs. The service connects different parts of the campus and nearby locations, such as Easley and Greenville.

Campus routes are outlined below:

  • Seneca River Basin (SRB) Route: Connecting the C-14 Lot to the Brooks Center.
  • Bridge Route: Connects Lightsey Bridge to Tri-County Tech.
  • No Tow Route: Operates during football weekends, connecting West Resident Parking to P-7/P-8.
  • Park-N-Ride: Offers economical parking options with shuttles to and from designated lots.
  • Nursing Route: Connects Cherry Road and P-8 to the CU Nursing building.
  • Research Park Route: Connects Edwards Hall to the Advanced Materials Research Lab (AMRL), Rich Lab, and Library Depot.
  • CU-ICAR Route: Connects Clemson, Easley, and Greenville, including connections to Greenlink in Greenville.

Tigers Commute Mobility App

The Tiger Commute app and web platform, Tigers Commute, offer a comprehensive set of options for managing campus and community transportation. This includes finding parking options, accessing campus and community bus routes with real-time tracking, and locating electric charging stations and e-bike availability. Additionally, Clemson University offers a free shuttle service to nearby airports during breaks, providing students with transportation options during peak travel times. The Tigers Commute app also helps by offering features for finding commute options, including ride-sharing. TigersCommute.com is your one stop for all parking, transportation, and ridesharing information.

Improving Parking Situation

Clemson University continues to refine its parking and transportation strategies. The ratio of parking permits to available spaces varies based on whether students commute or live on campus, Hofmann said. This past spring semester, the ratio of parking permits to available spaces was 0.9 permits per space for students living on campus. In contrast, student commuters face a more challenging situation with a ratio of 2.2 permits per space, he explained. As a result, an average of 658 or 15% of extra spaces are always available, Hofmann said. He explained that this approach works effectively since parking demand is distributed throughout the day. "Students' class schedules differ, meaning not all permit holders are on campus simultaneously, allowing for more efficient use of available space," he said.

Guest Parking

If your guest parks and pays a parking meter, no permit is required. For long-term parking, online parking permits are available.
