The ideal candidate is a college student or recent graduate seeking to gain experience in large-scale coral reef restoration research.

Interns will gain experience in ex situ coral culture within recirculating aquaculture systems, develop an understanding of water quality requirements for coral growth and resilience, and practice asexual coral propagation through microfragmentation techniques.

Bay Islands Reef Restoration (BIRR) Coral Internship

Bay Islands Reef Restoration offers a comprehensive conservation internship program which includes practical fieldwork in coral restoration. A coral internship with BIRR offers hands-on experience in all aspects of coral conservation with a busy and growing non-profit organization. You will work with BIRR in all areas of coral restoration including coral nursery maintenance, coral nursery monitoring and disease management, coral outplanting, coral outplant monitoring and coral nursery construction. Furthermore, interns will assist with marketing and social media, and educating and assisting Turquoise Bay and Mayan Princess resort guests in coral restoration activities.

BIRR includes the PADI - Bay Islands Reef Restoration Diver Distinctive Specialty course as the foundation for your internship. The PADI certification course will provide an introduction into coral ecology and coral restoration and an understanding of BIRR's daily operations.

Interns will learn new skills, not only in diving and marine conservation, but also in learning about diverse cultures and languages that will help them grow and develop as a person. You will have the opportunity to learn from local Garifuna Divemasters who have been living here and diving on this reef their whole lives. You can also practice your Spanish or learn the local Garifuna language, as well learn about Garifuna food, dancing and weekly parties in nearby Punta Gorda.

BIRR will work with you to design an internship where you decide how long you want to stay and what you want to learn. You will live in our fully furnished Divemaster intern house with new friends who all share the same passion - THE OCEAN!

Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences (RIMS) Coral Reef Research Internship

The Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences proudly offers ongoing summer internship programs designed to immerse participants in the dynamic fields of dolphin research and coral reef conservation. RIMS's Coral Reef Research Internship offers a deep dive into coral reef ecology under the mentorship of a seasoned marine biologist. Jennifer Keck has been the Education & Research Coordinator with RIMS for over 23 years. She is also a PADI Instructor and has logged over 7,000 dives on Roatan’s reefs. When not working with the university and academic groups that visit our facility, you can find her at RIMS’s Coral Nursery, growing corals that will eventually be outplanted onto our reef.

REEF's Marine Education & Conservation Internship Program

REEF's Marine Education & Conservation Internship Program offers participants opportunities to gain hands-on experience in outreach and education, guest engagement, non-profit operations, conservation science, event planning, graphic design, social media development, and public speaking. REEF Marine Education & Conservation Interns will work closely with staff, fellows, and volunteers to impliment REEF programming, engage with members of the public, and support operations throughout the organization.
