Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) offers a diverse range of programs and courses designed to meet the educational and career goals of its students. From workforce preparation to university transfer options and continuing education, CPCC provides accessible and comprehensive learning opportunities.
Career-Focused Programs
CPCC emphasizes preparing students for the workforce. The cornerstone of the North Carolina Community College System is the preparation of students for entry into the workforce, for job changes and for career advancement to meet individual goals and regional needs. The college offers two-year Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees and shorter-term diploma and certificate programs. Graduates of these programs develop marketable employment and college-level academic skills. These programs are designed for students who intend to enter the workforce upon graduation, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in their chosen fields. In some cases, courses within the programs are transferable to colleges and universities. Students may reach other career goals such as updating job skills, career advancement and re-entry into the workforce.
Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degrees
These two-year degrees provide students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in a specific career field.
Diplomas
Awarded after completion of a minimum of 36 semester credit hours, or the number of credit hours specified by the specific program of study. Some two-year degree programs also have one-year diplomas, as well as certificates that require less than one year of full-time study. These shorter-term programs offer focused training in a particular area. For program completion, a minimum of 25% of credit hours in the program must be earned at Central Piedmont.
Certificates
Special short-term certificates are offered in a number of programs. Courses in certificate programs are taken from diploma and degree programs and may be completed within 12 to 18 semester credit hours. These programs provide specialized skills and knowledge for specific job roles. A student may earn certificates that build to earning a diploma or degree. A student may earn a certificate(s) in the same semester that he or she earns a degree or diploma.

Program Availability
Certain programs are available at all campuses. Others are available only at certain campuses. To ensure program quality and student success, a minimum of 25% of the program's credit hours must be earned at Central Piedmont.
University Transfer Programs
In addition to career-focused programs, CPCC provides a pathway for students who wish to continue their education at four-year colleges and universities. The college provides the first two years of study in the arts and sciences and pre-professional fields for students who wish to transfer to four-year colleges and universities in the Associate in Arts (A.A.), Associate in Science (A.S.), Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.), and Associate in Engineering (A.E.) degrees. These programs offer a solid foundation in general education and prepare students for upper-level coursework in their chosen fields.
Associate in Arts (A.A.)
This degree is designed for students pursuing degrees in humanities, social sciences, and other liberal arts fields.
Associate in Science (A.S.)
This degree is tailored for students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Associate in Fine Arts (A.F.A.)
This degree is for students pursuing careers in visual arts, music, theater, and other fine arts disciplines.

College and Career Readiness
Recognizing that some students may require additional support to succeed in college-level coursework, the College and Career Readiness department at Central Piedmont takes a student-focused approach to help students develop vital academic and work readiness skills needed to transition to college-level coursework or seek employment. A basic premise of the community college movement is the expansion of educational opportunities for all adults, including those facing academic barriers to success. Developmental studies are prerequisite and co-requisite courses for students who require additional support in college-level English, reading, and mathematics courses. Initial student placement in developmental courses is based on individual college placement policies and procedures.
Corporate and Continuing Education
CPCC's commitment to lifelong learning extends beyond traditional degree programs. Corporate and Continuing Education is offered across college disciplines in relevant and popular topic areas through non-credit programming, events and services for individuals and employers. With flexibility in design, content and delivery, Corporate and Continuing Education plays a significant role in meeting the training needs of business and industry. For individuals, Corporate and Continuing Education offers year-round programming and services to help adults meet their professional and personal goals, including starting or growing a small business or preparing for retirement. Students can choose from hundreds of non-degree courses and programs at Central Piedmont.
