Navigating Cal Poly Pomona Summer Tuition Courses: A Comprehensive Guide
Summer courses at Cal Poly Pomona offer a valuable opportunity for students to accelerate their degree progress, explore new subjects, or catch up on required coursework. Understanding the financial aspects of summer enrollment is crucial for effective planning. This guide provides a detailed overview of tuition, fees, financial aid options, and important deadlines to help students navigate summer sessions successfully.
Understanding Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees are paid directly to Cal Poly Pomona but are only a part of a student’s education costs. Summer fees do vary from other semesters, and there is a cost savings potential in Summer, depending on the types of courses and/or the number of units you are taking. Please contact your advisor to discuss. Summer classes are self-supported.
Regular State Tuition Fees and Additional Costs
Students enrolling in State Support (Regular session) 6990 courses are charged Regular State tuition fees plus $331.32 mandatory auxiliary fees plus Student Success Fee of $223.50. Note: Auxiliary fees include ASI, Health Services, and more.
Non-Resident Tuition Fee
For out-of-state students, a Non-Resident Tuition Fee applies, which is an additional $444 per unit on top of the tuition and fees listed above.
Student Involvement and Representation Fee (SIRF)
The Student Involvement and Representation Fee (SIRF) of $2.00 is an optional fee that California State University (CSU) students pay to support the Cal State Student Association (CSSA). The fee is $2 per term, and it's assessed twice a year. This $2 optional fee supports statewide student representation.

Potential Changes in Tuition and Fees
The CSU makes every effort to keep student costs to a minimum. Tuition and fees listed in published schedules or student accounts may need to be increased when public funding is inadequate. Therefore, CSU reserves the right, even after tuition or fees are initially charged or initial payments are made, to increase or modify any listed tuition or fees. All listed fees, other than mandatory systemwide tuition, are subject to change without notice, until the date when instruction for a particular semester or quarter has begun. All CSU-listed tuition and fees should be regarded as estimates that are subject to change upon approval by the Board of Trustees, the chancellor or the presidents, as appropriate.
Estimating Your Costs
You will be able to review the tuition and fee charts to estimate your costs. Tuition & Mandatory Fees are the cost paid to Cal Poly Pomona for courses and includes mandatory campus fees. This figure is based off your actual enrollment & charges for the summer.
Cost of Attendance
Tuition and fees are paid directly to Cal Poly Pomona but are only a part of a student’s education costs. Food & Housing is the average cost per academic year to live in the Pomona / LA County area while attending Cal Poly Pomona. No distinction is made with respect to the mode of instruction in determining costs - students enrolled in online courses or a fully online program have the same elements included in their cost of attendance budget.
Financial Aid Opportunities for Summer Courses
Financial aid may be available to current Cal Poly Pomona undergraduate students to assist with their summer costs. It may be possible to adjust your financial aid disbursements to help cover summer session costs. Students should speak to their financial aid counselor to determine eligibility. Enroll in 6+ units, and Financial Aid & Scholarships will assess your eligibility.
Key Requirements for Financial Aid

Federal Pell Grant
The Federal Pell Grant is based on your enrollment for any given term. If you change your enrollment throughout the summer term, your Pell Grant will be adjusted accordingly. Your Pell Grant eligibility is going to be based on a number of factors specific to you. If you were enrolled full-time during both the fall and spring terms and received your full Pell Grant during those terms, you can still use part of your overall Pell Grant eligibility for summer even if you enroll in less than 6 units. You might be limited by your overall Pell Lifetime Eligibility, as students may not receive more than six years of full-time Pell Grant eligibility (600%).
Cal Grant
Using Cal Grant during the summer reduces your total program eligibility for Cal Grant. If you take the summer payment option, you might not have enough eligibility remaining to assist you in future semesters. Cal Grant eligibility will depend on your remaining eligibility and number of enrolled units, with minimum of 6 units required for consideration. To be considered for a Cal Grant for the summer, please complete the Summer Cal Grant Request form, which will be available through the Student Forms Portal beginning April 2, 2025. Cal Grant requires a minimum enrollment of 6 units during the summer. Your official payment will be based on the number of units that you’re enrolled in at the time of awarding. If you change your enrollment throughout the summer term, your Cal Grant will be adjusted.
Federal Direct Loans
If you did not accept the maximum amount of Federal Direct Loans in the 2024-25 academic year and you are enrolled in at least 6 units for summer, you may be offered Federal Direct Loans for summer. Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loan amounts are based on the remaining loan eligibility you have leftover from the academic year. You can only borrow a certain amount of Direct Loan funding each year; you can review annual loan limits and the amount of loans you have borrowed at the Federal Student Aid site. The difference between what you borrowed during the 2024-2025 year and your annual maximum loan amount is what you might borrow during the summer. If you borrowed your full Direct Loan eligibility during the academic year, you can consider asking your parents to borrow a Parent PLUS loan, if you are a dependent student. Your summer borrowing cannot exceed your summer cost of attendance minus any other financial assistance, and might be limited by your lifetime Direct Loan borrowing.Example: A student who was offered $3,500 Subsidized and $2,000 Unsubsidized Loans during the 2024-2025 academic year (fall and spring) only accepted $2,000 of their Subsidized loan for fall and spring.
Federal Parent PLUS Loans
Federal Parent PLUS Loans are available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. These loans can cover your student's summer cost of education that exceeds other aid received. The maximum Parent PLUS Loan amount borrowed cannot exceed your summer cost of education minus any other financial assistance. Additional Requirements Parents Must Complete. Funds cannot be disbursed to your student's account until all requirements are complete. Borrowers must complete a Loan Agreement (Master Promissory Note) for the loan.
California DREAM Loan
If you were offered, but did not accept the maximum amount of California DREAM Loan offered in the 2024-25 academic year and you are enrolled in at least 6 units for summer, you may be offered a California DREAM Loan for summer. California DREAM Loan amounts are based on remaining loan eligibility you have leftover from the academic year. You can only borrow a certain amount of California DREAM Loan funding each year (up to $2,000 per semester; $4,000 total for the academic year).

We recommend that students be enrolled in all intended summer classes no later than April 26, 2025 in order to be accurately packaged with Summer Financial Aid.
Enrollment Requirements for Aid
Each type of aid has specific enrollment requirements. The Pell Grant will be packaged at the full-time (12 unit) amount. If you are enrolled inin less than 12 units, the amount of your grant will be adjusted. Student A is enrolled in three units during the 1st 5 Week Session (Start date of June 4) and three units during the 2nd 5 Week Session (start date of July 10). Student B is enrolled in six units, all during the 2nd 5 Week Session (start date of July 10). The Pell Grant will be packaged based on enrollment in 12 units. Contingencies and Potential Aid Cancellation
All offers of summer financial aid are contingent on students successfully completing courses for the Spring 2024 semester. We will review grades and academic performance at the end of the Spring semester and if you do not meet the requirements of our Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy, your summer financial aid will be canceled. If you receive financial aid for summer and you withdraw from all courses before the end of the term, you will most likely be required to return a portion of your aid.
