Top Division 1 Track and Field Colleges: A Comprehensive Overview

College track and field, while often overlooked in mainstream media, serves as a crucial stepping stone for aspiring professional athletes. For high school athletes with dreams of collegiate competition, understanding the landscape of Division 1 track and field programs is essential. This article provides a breakdown of the most talented men's track teams in Division 1, examines what it takes to get recruited by these top programs, and highlights the factors that contribute to their success.

The Allure of Division 1 Track and Field

When a track athlete commits to compete in D1, they often hope to follow in the footsteps of athletes like Matthew Boling, a World Champion in the mixed 4x400 meter relay. Boling's success isn't entirely surprising, considering he was America's fastest boy in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. His decision to compete for the Georgia Bulldogs highlights the importance of choosing the right program.

While Boling was destined for greatness, the top Division 1 track teams aren't solely reliant on individual talent. They leverage their resources to attract the best recruits, creating an environment where success is more likely. With over 200 D1 track teams, the competition for top talent is fierce, leading to a concentration of elite athletes at a select few universities.

Evaluating the Top Programs

This evaluation considers team performances from 2019 to 2023, encompassing indoor and outdoor track and field, as well as cross country, to identify the most consistently successful programs. Seven teams stand out as the most talented:

1. Florida Gators: The Florida Gators earn the top spot on this list for good reason, with National Championships to prove it. Grant Holloway and Joseph Fahnbulleh were literally the best athletes on the best team in all of college track when they were there. But they just won the NCAA championship outdoors scoring more than half the points in only the 400 meter dash and the 4x400 meter relay. Coach Mike Holloway trains pros like Erriyon Knighton while coaching the Gators, and they have won 6 national titles since 2012. Former Gator Dominic Williams said himself, if you really want to win an NCAA championship then the smart choice is always to go to Florida.

2. Texas Tech Red Raiders: As quietly as it is kept, Texas Tech is now the best men’s track team in their state. Consider that Courtney Lindsey won the NCAA 100 meter dash, and then made team USA in the 200 meter dash in 2023. But he did not win the 60 meter dash indoors. The NCAA champion was his teammate Terrence Jones who is the collegiate record holder in that event! That is how good the Red Raiders are. They also have the best transfer recruiting in the NCAA without much challenge. Simply put they only recruit the best, especially in the sprints, and the results prove it.

3. Georgia Bulldogs: The Georgia Bulldogs signed Matthew Boling because he is the type of talent they like to sign. He could have stayed home to run for the Texas Longhorns, but the Bulldogs are even better. Boling made team USA to run the 400 meter when he wasn’t even the best 400 runner on his college team! Georgia basically finds the top recruit in the nation in an event, and signs them. What happens from there is basically up to them, win lose or draw. Matthew would be a superstar track athlete just about anywhere. But there is a reason why he chose to run for Georgia, and I can’t blame him. Florida and Georgia are 1 of the biggest rivalries in all of college sports.

4. Arkansas Razorbacks: Arkansas is incredibly talented but their jumps are perhaps the best in the nation right now. Jaydon Hibbert just won the NCAA triple jump as a freshman! However, Arkansas does everything well in men’s track and field. Consider that Tyson Gay, Wallace Spearmon, and Jarrion Lawson were all Razorbacks. The first 2 are some of the most famous American sprinters ever. The third is the first man to complete the Jesse Owens triple at the NCAAs since well Jesse Owens. In any event on any track an Arkansas athlete is likely a threat to win.

5. Texas Longhorns and LSU Tigers (Tie): The Texas Longhorns and the LSU Tigers earned the number 5 spot for two separate reasons. Both teams aren’t that great in the distance events, but they make up for it everywhere else. Texas is basically a bunch of NCAA championship qualifiers assembled on one team. They don’t win a bunch in the individual races but all that talent balances it out. While LSU sprints and jumps with the best of them. They are the reigning NCAA champions in the 4x100 meter relay, behind Godson Oghenbrume as their leader. They also lost Juhvaughn Harrison a couple of seasons ago, who is perhaps the greatest jumper to ever compete in college in the modern era. Each team has some of the best facilities in the country, so if you get recruited to compete for either, you are probably the real deal.

7. Stanford Cardinal: Stanford is a complete program because they contest every event at the national level and have been knocking on the door as division 1 champions. Udodi Onwuzurike won the NCAA 200 meter dash in 2023 proving that they can sprint with the best. While Ky Robinson led their distance program as the reigning NCAA outdoor champion in the 5K and 10K in addition to leading their cross country team to another top 10 finish. Stanford isn’t just smarter than you, they’re also faster. So if they are recruiting you then you have to be pretty legit both on the track and in the classroom.

Getting Recruited: What It Takes

If you want to get recruited by one of the top track programs in Division 1 you should probably have recorded performances that are first team national elite on MileSplit. It would be best to do so in more than one event, before the beginning of your senior year of high school. It would help a whole lot if you have already won multiple state championships and made the finals at any National championship meet at the club level. Ultimately if that does not describe you just now, there are over 200 D1 track teams that might be a great fit for you. But a full-ride scholarship to one of the very top programs is not something you should hold your breath for.
