Mastering Blue Magic in Final Fantasy V: A Comprehensive Guide

Blue Magic, a unique and versatile skillset in Final Fantasy V, allows players to learn and utilize enemy abilities. This guide provides a detailed overview of Blue Magic, including how to learn spells, a comprehensive spell list, and strategies for acquiring them efficiently.

Introduction to Blue Magic

Blue Magic, or "Blue," is a special ability in Final Fantasy V that enables characters to learn spells from enemies. The Blue Mage job class specializes in this type of magic, marking the first instance in the Final Fantasy series where magic could be learned from enemies. Blue Magic encompasses a wide range of spells, from offensive attacks to beneficial enhancements, with some of the most useful spells in the game falling under this category.

Learning Blue Magic: The Fundamentals

To learn a Blue Magic spell, a character must be hit by the spell either as a Blue Mage or with the Learning ability equipped while in another job. Only one character needs to learn a specific spell for it to be used by all other Blue Mages in the party. It's important to note that the Blue Mage doesn't need to survive the attack to learn it; as long as another party member survives the battle, the desired Blue Magic spell will be learned.

The Learning Ability

Learning, also known as Learn, is a recurring ability in the series. It is often learned from the Blue Mage class and allows the user to learn Blue Magic even when not using the Blue Mage class. Learning is a Level 2 Blue Mage ability that requires 20 ABP to learn.

Control: A Useful Tool for Blue Magic Acquisition

Control is the Level 2 ability in the Beserker (Beastmaster) class that inflicts the Control status, learned for 50 ABP. This ability is particularly useful in learning Blue Magic spells like White Wind, Mighty Guard, and Transfusion. The ability has a 40% chance of working without the Hypno Crown equipped and a 75% chance of working with the Hypno Crown equipped.

The Hypno Crown: Enhancing Control

The Hypno Crown (originally called Coronet) is headgear armor that can be equipped by the party to improve the effectiveness rate of Control. It provides +5 Defense and Magic Evasion, +1 Magic, and +4 Evasion. It can only be found in Drakenvale. With the Hypno Crown equipped, the player has a 75% chance of controlling the target, compared to a 40% chance without it.

Azulmagia: A Blue Magic Goldmine

Azulmagia (also known as Apocalypse in the RPGe translation) is a boss and one of the Demons of the Rift in Final Fantasy V. Locked up in the Dimension Castle dungeons, he will attack the party if they answer affirmatively to his question of whether they are heroes. He is a notable encounter for all the Blue Magic he can use.

Azulmagia has 17 of the 30 Blue Magic spells in the game, and casting certain Blue Magic spells on him will cause him to learn them and start using them on the party, giving him a total of 28 of the 30 Blue Magic spells he can actively use (he will not use Transfusion and Moon Flute). These 28 spells can be learned by any Blue Mage in the party, if they have not learned them already.

Azulmagia's Blue Magic Spell List

Azulmagia has 17 of the 30 Blue Magic spells in the game, however, he is a boss and can only be fought once, and the chances of him using all of the spells is not likely. There are much easier ways to obtain blue magic spells.

Practicality and Availability

There are many ways to obtain blue magic, some just are not very practical. If its not practical its not in the guide. For example you can learn Aqua Breath from Famed Mimic Gogo but that would also mean you would have to beat him in battle which is difficult unless you simply wait and do not attack in which case he will not use Aqua Breath.
