Dreamscape Learn at ASU: Revolutionizing Education Through Immersive VR Experiences
Dreamscape Learn at Arizona State University (ASU) is pioneering a new era of education by leveraging virtual reality (VR) to create immersive and engaging learning experiences. This innovative platform, born from a collaboration between ASU’s EdPlus and Enterprise Technology teams, aims to transform traditional learning methods and equip students with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
A Collaborative Partnership
The success of Dreamscape Learn at ASU hinges on the synergy between EdPlus and Enterprise Technology. EdPlus spearheads the pedagogical development of these immersive experiences, working closely with faculty to design curriculum that maximizes the potential of VR. Meanwhile, ASU’s Enterprise Technology manages the Learning Experience team, which includes a team of student workers known as pod operators.
The Role of Pod Operators
These pod operators play a crucial role in guiding fellow ASU students through the Dreamscape Learn experience. They are responsible for ensuring the correct use of VR equipment, running course modules within the pods, and answering student questions. Their responsibilities extend beyond technical support, as they also engage with hundreds of visitors each month, including university leadership and distinguished guests such as ASU President Crow, Arizona Cardinals football players, and renowned anthropologist Jane Goodall. This unique opportunity exposes them to diverse perspectives and hones their ability to navigate complex situations. According to Allison Hall, senior director of ASU’s Learning Experience, this exposure serves as a "wonderful catalyst for starting learners on their career path," enabling them to introduce new technology and connect with experts across various fields.
The Dreamscape Learn Experience
Launched in 2020 in partnership with Dreamscape Immersive, Dreamscape Learn transports students into virtual worlds where they can explore complex concepts in an engaging and accessible manner. Over 5,000 in-person and online ASU students engage with Dreamscape Learn weekly. One of the flagship experiences, "The Alien Zoo," is an orbiting intergalactic wildlife refuge for endangered life forms. Developed by media and entertainment luminaries, including Walter Parkes and Steven Spielberg, every detail of the Alien Zoo is meticulously crafted to provide a truly immersive experience. Students can observe the intricate workings of fictional, yet biologically realistic creatures up close, delving into their physiology, genetics, and evolutionary history.
Transferable Skills for Future Success
Dreamscape Learn is not just about engaging students; it's about equipping them with transferable skills that will benefit them throughout their careers. Students learn to think critically, reason quantitatively, and communicate effectively - all highly valued skills in today's job market. John Vanden Brooks, associate dean of immersive learning at ASU, emphasizes that Dreamscape Learn provides "a set of transferable skills to carry them through their careers."

Expanding Horizons
Looking ahead, ASU Dreamscape Learn aims to expand its reach to new subjects, including chemistry, climate science, and sustainability. They also plan to incorporate student storytelling from ASU courses like Designing for Dreamscape into their immersive educational experiences. Lisa Flesher, Chief of Realm 4 Initiatives for EdPlus at ASU, envisions endless possibilities, stating, "We can use data to predict future scenarios or shrink to the size of a nanobot and travel at a microscopic level."
Dreamscape Learn Beyond ASU
The impact of Dreamscape Learn extends beyond the ASU campus. Rowan University became the first college outside of ASU to implement a virtual reality-based curriculum using Dreamscape Learn. Furthermore, ASU Prep Digital online high school seniors were recently given the opportunity to participate in the Dreamscape immersive experience, with the option to bring a guest. This event, similar to ASU Prep’s Microschool Program, provided an opportunity for students to socialize in person and explore the campus.
ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest unveiled its Dreamscape Learn Pod, the first virtual learning experience of its kind for K-12 students in the country. Officially unveiled, the Dreamscape Learn pod provides virtual reality-enabled courseware that teachers can use to immerse classes in virtually rendered locations that coincide with lesson plans. There are two modes of learning within the Dreamscape Learn pod, one narrator-driven and the other more interactive, allowing students to solve problems and find solutions in virtual environments.
