These schools offer day programs as well as boarding facilities and serve the needs of handicapped and learning-disabled students. Quality preschools and nursery schools, including programs operated by Dutchess Community College and Vassar College, are abundant throughout the county.
Dutchess BOCES: A Cooperative Approach to Education
At the secondary level, the county's 13 school districts are affiliated with the Dutchess County Board of Cooperative Extension Services (BOCES). Dutchess BOCES was organized on May 22, 1957, upon the order of the Commissioner of Education. This government-funded agency provides local school districts with a variety of educational programs and support services to children and adults in Dutchess County. Through the cooperative efforts of our thirteen component school districts, Dutchess BOCES is able to offer a wide variety of educational programs and support services to children and adults in Dutchess County. We serve a student base of 47,000 pupils.
BOCES offers a wide array of programs, including special education programs and technical courses. These technical courses cover diverse fields, ranging from data processing to auto repair. This allows students to gain practical skills and prepare for various career paths.
