East Central College: A Comprehensive Overview

East Central College (ECC), a public community college primarily located in Union, Missouri, has been serving the educational needs of east central Missouri since its establishment in 1968. In addition to its main campus, ECC offers classes in Rolla and Washington, extending its reach to a broader student population. History and Development

The story of East Central College begins in 1968, born from a vision to address the educational requirements of the people residing in east central Missouri. The college officially opened its doors in September 1969, holding its first classes in rented facilities at the Union Memorial Auditorium. The initial enrollment was 476 students. Recognizing the need for a permanent campus, the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of land that same year.

In January 1972, the first classes were held at the permanent campus in the Administration Building. Over the next few decades, East Central College continued to expand its facilities to meet the growing needs of its students. The Multipurpose Building was added in 1973, followed by the Vocational-Technical Building in 1978, and the Classroom Building in 1985. In 1998, the Auditorium/Classroom facility was completed, further enhancing the college's academic capabilities.

The Health & Science Building, boasting almost 52,000 square feet (4,831 m2) of space, was completed in January 2009. In 2011, the original Administration Building underwent a complete renovation and was renamed Buescher Hall. The dedication ceremony on October 30, 2011, honored George H. Buescher, who played a vital role in establishing the college and served as the first president of the board of trustees.

For the 2020-2021 academic year, the in-district tuition and fees were $3,288, in-state tuition and fees were $4,392, and out-of-state tuition and fees were $6,168. There is no application fee.

In the 2022-2023 academic year, 63 percent of undergraduates received grant or scholarship aid, with the average scholarship or grant award being $4,223.

Accreditation and Recognition

East Central College is recognized by and operates under the coordination of the Missouri Department of Higher Education. It is also a member of the American Association of Community Colleges and the Missouri Community College Association. These affiliations ensure that credits earned at East Central College are recognized by other colleges, universities, professional schools, and state-governed professions.

East Central College Foundation

Established in 1975, the East Central College Foundation is a non-profit 501c(3) corporation dedicated to supporting the educational mission of the college. The Foundation Board of Directors comprises individuals from various businesses, professions, and community services, who actively participate in fundraising, membership activities, finance and investment planning, and supervision of planned gifts and endowments.

Strategic Planning

East Central College is committed to continuous improvement and strategic planning to meet the evolving needs of its students and community. In 2024, the college undertook a comprehensive strategic planning process that involved workshops, focus groups, and collaboration with community partners. On Nov. 4, 2024, ECC’s Board of Trustees unanimously approved the new strategic plan.

Service Area

The East Central College District includes six public K-12 school districts: Crawford County R-1 (Bourbon), New Haven, St. Clair R-13, Sullivan C-2, Union R-11, and Washington; as well as four public K-8 districts: Franklin County R-2, Lonedell R-14, Spring Bluff R-15, and Strain-Japan R-16. This taxing district includes most of Franklin County and portions of Crawford, Gasconade, St. Louis, and Washington counties.

Beyond the college taxing district, East Central College is charged by the State of Missouri with providing programs and services to an extended service region comprising portions or all of Franklin, Warren, Gasconade, Osage, Maries, Phelps, Dent, Washington, Montgomery, St. Louis, and Crawford counties.
