Edmond Memorial Freshman Academy: A Comprehensive Overview
Edmond Memorial High School, a prominent public secondary school in Edmond, Oklahoma, has a rich history and a commitment to academic excellence. As one of three high schools in the Edmond school district, it plays a vital role in the community's educational landscape. To facilitate the transition from middle school to high school for incoming students, Edmond Memorial established the Freshman Academy, an independent facility located on the high school campus.
Historical Context of Edmond Memorial High School
Originally named Edmond High School, the institution held the distinction of being the sole secondary school within the city limits. Its first graduating class in 1922 comprised 24 students. As Edmond experienced growth, the school underwent several relocations, ultimately settling at its current location on 15th Street in the mid-1960s.
The building that currently houses Edmond Memorial was initially constructed in 1966 as a school exclusively for seventh-grade students. It welcomed its first class of seventh graders during the second semester of the 1966-67 school year. At that time, Edmond High School was situated at the corner of Ninth Street and Rankin, accommodating all sophomores, juniors, and seniors in Edmond. The building that once housed Edmond High School is now known as Central Middle School, serving sixth, seventh, and eighth graders from various elementary schools on the east side of Edmond.
In a disturbing incident on April 4, 1998, three students detonated a pipe bomb in an attempt to destroy the fiberglass bulldog in the school's foyer. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.
Over the past decade, Edmond Memorial has undertaken several construction projects to enhance its facilities. These include an expanded library, new parking lots, a new football locker room/pom and cheer practice facility, and the establishment of the Freshman Academy. The auditorium has also undergone renovations to improve the student experience.
